Abstract
This paper discusses in detail the topic that has been recently raised regarding
honouring the athletes who play any sport for the institution. The paper has been written
taking into account the recent remarks made by NCAA president regarding the same.
The paper deals with an in depth study of the pros and cons related to paying the
college athletes. The paper is written to understand if the scholarship is enough compensation
for the college athletes or they are being exploited in the process. With an aim to understand
if this procedure is fine or, needs to be changed, this paper questions the various bodies
esponsible for the rules and regulations and, studies the policies from their aspects as well.
The paper critically analyses all aspects related to compensating the athletes. The conclusions
are based on these different studies.

Should Regulation regarding payment of college athletes be changed?
A recent statement made by NCAA president opened the quarters for debate on the
subject, whether the student athletes should be paid for participating in sports or not. While,
the president of NCAA remained unsupportive on this subject claiming that athletes who play
on behalf of the institution are amateurs and, are being compensated enough through the
scholarships, there are many who believe that these students should be paid for their
participation. There are many people who believe that the scholarships are fair enough

should be fixated properly in the mind.
Amateurism & Exploitation: The Bitter Truth
The students who participate in the intercollegiate athletics are basically considered as
amateurs by the NCAA committee. “The main reason a student attends college is to gain
education or study. Athletics is just a part of the cu

college” (Meggyesy, 2000).
“The students who participate in these intercollegiate athletics are not looked upon as
professionals for the same reason. Hence, they are not paid for playing these
games”(Murphy & Pace, 1994). All this
ings one back to athletes being considered as
amateurs and, if they are being exploited in the purpose.

The NCAA believes that employees of their member schools or professionals should
e paid. Amateursare being trained while on the participatory role. So, a full scholarship
which includes everything right from tuition fee to accommodation is more than enough for
the amateurs.
The amateur is a term that colleges adopted in order to maintain the educational
integrity. While the colleges are not technically paying out the athletes, they are taking care
of the athletes’ expenses. This is paying them out in some way.
There is a code which the NCAA has adopted for the athletes that is called the Sanity
