Introduction
In order to fulfill the hunger demands of population, it may be necessary for the farmers or the crop producers to produce more crops. Alternate to this approach could be to increase the efficiency of crop production by increasing the fertility of land and protecting crops from diseases. In order to do the farming activities, the farmers have used the same alternate approach of using pesticides. However, due to the increasing population and simultaneously increasing hunger needs, pesticides are now being violently exploited.
This overuse of pesticides have led to severe environmental issues, which are not constricted instead they may now be posing a threat to the natural resources such as river bodies, air and soil moreover, people with in Australia may also be at a verge of being impacted due to overuse of pesticide. This report focuses upon the impacts of pesticide use upon Australian population as well as environment and further, discussion will be done based upon certain policies as well as philosophies.
The Overuse of Pesticides as an Environmental Health Issue in Australia
Pesticides are basically chemical formulations that were being developed with the purpose to protect the crop from diseases and to fulfill the huger needs. In other words, diseases of fodder crops creates a huge loss of crops as well as capital investment and therefore, in order to prevent the crops from these diseases pesticides are being used.
Insecticides, he
icides, fungicides and much more are some of the categories of pesticides that have been widely used all over agriculture and other u
an settings (Tsaboula et al., 2016).
However, overuse of these pesticides may be a potent threat to environment as well as Australian population. According to a report presented by Deloitte, more than AUD 17billion worth of crops are being grown in Australia annually and is being subjected to violent pesticide use. Therefore, pesticide industry emerges as AUD 26billion industry in Australia, which directly reflects the frequency or violent use of pesticides (CropLife, 2019).
The Impact of Overusing Pesticides on the Australian Population
Pesticides have led to serious threat to environment in Australia. This is majorly because pesticides when sprayed or applied to crops also travels to the soil. As a result of this, these chemicals enters the ground water and pollute. This ground water when used by people creates several health diseases such as poisoning, dia
hea, vomiting and much more. Further, it may be necessary to consider that when people are consuming crops, fruits and vegetables, pesticide and associated chemicals enter their body, as a result of which further diseases occur and health is being compromised.
Further, Tsaboula et al. (2016) through their study suggested that the most vulnerable group being effected by pesticides are farmers. This is majorly due to the fact that farmers are associated it the spraying or application of these pesticides therefore, they may be in direct contact with these chemicals. As a result of this, pesticides may enter their body and cause harm. Moreover, they are being associated with the washing and cutting of crops, upon which pesticide may have been applied and therefore, direct contact with the chemical continues.
Along with this, the workers at the manufacturing industries are also at high risk of being infected or impacted due to these. Roncati, Piscioli and Pusiol (2016) further mentioned that the use of organochlorine pesticides (OCP) have been found to be directly associated with the endocrine disruptors. These endocrine disruptors can have antagonistic effect upon the natural production of hormones within body, as a result of which, health effects such as immune system suppression, hormone disruption, reproductive abnormalities, cancer and many more diseases may occur.
García-García et al. (2016) through their study mentioned that pesticides might have neurological impacts upon the workers as well as farmers, which may be are in direct contact with the chemicals. Methomyl, which is a ca
