Students are required to critically analyse the stages of the counselling process. To complete
this assessment item successfully, you are required to analyse two (video clips) of the three
role-plays provided, in terms of the stages of counselling, skills used by the counsellor, and
counsellor and client goals. You will also need to evaluate the “counsellor” in each of the roleplays, highlighting strengths and areas of improvement.
For each role play analysis (approximately 1000 words each), you need to include the
following:
• A brief overview of the role play/scenario (no more than 100 words).
• Identify the stage (or stages) that you can see and provide a brief description of the
stage as it occurs in the role play. You might like to describe the process of the role
play as a stage, or number of stages. Identify the key goals that seem to be
underpinning the counsellor’s dialogue, as well as what the client goals appear to be
for each stage/s.
• Identify 3-5 skills or techniques that the counsellor uses in the role play and provide
a brief explanation of why the skill as it is enacted by the counsellor, and how it
relates to that stage of counselling.
• Provide an evaluation of the “counsellor” in the role play, using the checklist
(provided on HELP). You don’t have to use this as a table, but rather as a guide to
what things to discuss in your evaluation. It might be easier to structure this section
in terms of things that the counsellor did well (their strengths), and things that could
be improved or done differently.
• A brief summary of your analysis and evaluation.
• Use academic essay writing and APA 7th formatting conventions throughout.
