Strategy on Reducing Regulatory and Administrative Burden

Purpose

As electronic health information is becoming more widespread, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) recognize that expectations for our information systems and for their users will continue to increase. As we look into the future, their strategic plan outlines and identifies government actions that will be most impactful. We will also look at how individuals can make an impact.

Instructions

Healthcare organizations should use the ONC strategic plan in the development of their own IT strategic plan to ensure compliance with federal guidelines.

Review the initiative “Strategy on Reducing Regulatory and Administrative Burden Relating to the Use of Health IT and EHRs.” You will note there are four workgroups mentioned in this strategy report:
- Clinical Documentation
- Health IT Usability and the User Experience
- EHR Reporting
- Public Health Reporting
Choose one (1) workgroup, and review the associated issues, challenges, and strategies. Select one (1) strategy in this workgroup that you would support.

My Contribution as an HIM Professional to Support this Strategy
The primary motive of this initiative was to reduce the time and effort to record health records electronically in the clinics. The clinics want to overcome the problems of receiving payments, maintaining data and patient care. The main hurdle to overcome all this was increasing physical burn out and cost compliances. As mentioned by Davidson et al. (2017), they want to decrease the regulatory burden around documentation requirements for patient visits.
In my opinion, the documentation that is required for maintaining the records of patients will increase the burden of the administrative level. It is not easy to record day-to-day practices such as capturing information directly and then separately recording in electronic health record systems. It is time-consuming, needs a number of efforts and because of it, the staff will not be able to give time to other crucial activities. It also increases the cost of the organization (Health Information Technology, 2019).
