Week 8 EC Daycare Letter Assignment: Why play is important 20pts
Due: Thursday 10.7 @ 11pm
You are the director of a mid-sized childcare center that specializes in the social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development of children ages 2-5yrs old. Your cu
iculum combines a rich learning environment with art, music, academics, play and imagination. Recently, Ms. Jamison toured your center and is considering enrolling her children, Angela age 2.5yrs, and Brently age 4yrs, in your program. While Ms. Jamison liked the openness and organization of the children’s room, and she was impressed with the staff’s knowledge of development, she was concerned because she saw children playing inside in unstructured activities and outside (free play) and not working on worksheets or activities that she believes promote the academic skills that her children need to succeed in school. She was also concerned by the mixed-age rooms and groups.
As the director, you will respond to Ms. Jamison’s concerns in a letter addressed to her. You will explain why and how play (provide examples) promotes healthy development including resilience, self-directed curiosity, and attention. Also discuss how play helps develop the cognitive and social and emotional skills necessary for success in school. **This means that you will really have to think about how kids in these age groups play and why they play the way that they do and what they play with. Make sure you are using connections to relevant theories and concepts from the chapter and power points.
** If you are not familiar with what a childcare center room looks like and includes please either do a Google search or a YouTube search to get an idea. Do not use the mission statements from established childcares or the content from educational videos as part of your reply to Ms. Jamison. Your letter must contain your ideas supported by concepts from this course. You must tie your statements to specific concepts, models, or theories from the course. (Vygotsky, Piaget, Kohlberg, Sternberg, Erikson,
ain development, etc.)
Your letter is to be no less than one full page single spaced. Use as many theories, models, and concepts as you can to support your position to Ms. Jamison. Remember, you are trying to educate her on your cu
iculum and philosophy as well as enroll her children in your program. Your letter should be friendly and professional. Each model, theory, or concept you use must be bolded in your letter. You do not need to provide citations unless you use sources that are not provided in the course. Sign your letter, Sincerely, (your name)
