Introduction
There has been increase in the chronic disease among Indigenous group of people in Australia. The major disease they are suffering with is COPD, which is mainly occu
ing because of the lifestyle they are leading, the kind of environment, where they are living and the economic status they are having, all of which is contributing towards their grim condition. This disease has also put a heavy burden over the population of the Indigenous group because of the vulnerability and lack of proper affordability of the treatment of the disease. In this assessment, adetailed discussion is done on the issues related to COPD among the indigenous group of people in Australia. The discussion is taken on the burden of disease on the people along with the health collaborations and interventions to address the issues related to COPD among the indigenous group of people.
Burden of COPD within Indigenous Australians
Coronary heart disease (CHD) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the leading the cases of mo
idity and the mortality among the Aboriginal and To
es Strait Islander people. According to Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (2014), the disease generally develops among young people, and it spreads faster among the Indigenous Australian than that of the non-Indigenous group of Australians, and it has been observed from the report that the CHD was 1.7 times more among the Indigenous males compared to 2.7 times more among the Indigenous female, compared to their non-Indigenous counterparts in the year 2004-05. However, the data changed in the year 2012-13, where approximately 4 percent of Indigenous adults have reported to get affected by COPD, which is almost 2.5 times more compared to the non-Indigenous Australians. Schubert et al. (2019) have further discussed thatCOPD is affecting the major reason behind the increased number of population of Indigenous group.
It is found that around 44 percent of adults smoke on daily basis, around 62 percent of people are engaged in mow level of exercise or were sedentary, and lastly it is found that around 69 percent of population are suffering from overweight or obesity (Heraganahally et al., 2020). These physical conditions are contributing towards the increased risk of COPD among the Indigenous group of people. Also, one of the major contributors for the increasing cases of COPD is exposure to the environment where they are living, which is not supporting a healthy life along with the food habits are also contributing a little towards the increasing number of people towards COPD.
Increase in the admission in hospital of Indigenous people suffering from COPD has also increased significantly, where it has been observed that around 2.4 times more Indigenous group are getting hospitalised for CHD and for the patient suffering from COPD getting hospitalised is five times higher in Indigenous. For the death rate also, the Indigenous group are dying of the disease compared to the non-Indigenous group of people and it is twice compared to die from CHD and around three times they are more likely to die from COPD as compared to the non-Indigenous group of Australians (Einsiedel et al., 2019). This increasing number of patients suffering from the COPD is putting immense pressure over the medical system of Australia.Because there are limited number of beds available for the patients and the limited number of healthcare, access to the indigenous people is also posing a serious threat to the increasing number of patients in Indigenous group suffering from COPD (Basnayake et al., 2017).
