Introduction
There are many kinds of health challenges, which are being faced by many people. Some are very serious and some are a little on a milder side. Among them, one of the health challenges that are taking a surge is the mental health challenges. Among one of the scenario regarding the mental health challenge is of Glenn. The situation in which Glen is right now is because of the tragic loss of his father, which had led to his mental anxiety, and the continuous stress is leading to take impulsive behaviours and actions. He feels anger all the time; however, he seems like an emotionless person with no expressions.
Overview of Social Works Included in Mental Health Treatment
In every country, there is a provision of providing all types of health care services and that responsibility is taken care by the health institutes or some kind of social groups based on the ailment. Among them, one of the most crucial ailments is mental health challenges. Smith, Holmes and Burkle (2019) have discussed that there are different forms of mental health ailments such as anxiety and panic attacks, bipolar disorder, depression, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, personality disorders, and many more.
These kinds of mental disorders may sometime get severe or they are not that severe initially, however left untreated may lead to some serious problems. Some of these ailments occur because of some neurological diseases; however, few of them occur because of stress or some kinds of accidents or unwanted events. Am
ose-Miller and Ashcroft (2016) have further discussed that if the severity of the mental health challenge is low then there are some social service organisations, which take care of these treatments.
As per the definition from WHO, that health is a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and are not merely the absence of the disease or infirmity, hence the mental health patients also need to be treated as the part of the society. Silove, Ventevogel and Rees (2017) have further added that the mental health has come from a study and the treatment of the mental disorders. In the previous attempt in medical science, it has been defined that the mental health has generally focused on the psychological and behavioural characteristics of the individual people rather than focusing on the condition as defined in the society as a whole. With further studies in this field, the definition of the mental health has been reflected on the following circumstances such as:
· Psychological and social harmony integration
· Quality of life and general well-being
· Self-actualisation and growth
· Effective personal adaptation
· The mutual influence of the individual, the group and the environment
These kinds of mental challenges and problems are taken care by many social work practices, which involve the self-help groups or the government. The Australian Association of Social Workers is a government-aided organisation that provides the scope of social work practice in the mental health (AASW, 2015). The social work professional involved with this, normally operates between the people and their social, cultural, physical and natural environments while considering the impacts of the economic, psychological, political, social, legal and environmental determinants of health and wellbeing.
Bagroy, Kumaraguru and De Choudhury (2017) have further discussed the kind of job roles that social work takes place in the mental health. The social workers are trained professional who understands and knows how to assess that the mental illnesses experienced by individuals, families, groups and the communities that are not being determined on any particular factor. There are many factors such as the personal factors, combined with the family issues, psychological, economic, health, educational, employment, legal or other societal issues, which cause the person to achieve a sound mental state and create the problems. Considering all the factors, the social workers then are able to decide whether to deal the mental problem on the individual basis or on group basis.
However, considering all the factors based on which the social workers can perform on the mental health practice are:
Public Mental Health: Clinical, community, residential, inpatient and emergency department settings provide aid in public mental health issues. However, further the psychological outreach, recovery and rehabilitation.
Adult Mental Health: Working as part of the interdisciplinary teams, the social workers provide the individual/ family/ career assessment, treatment and support.
Private Practice: Self-employed mental health social workers providing the counselling and therapeutic interventions.
Community Teams: Working as a case manager and with multidisciplinary teams provides treatments for disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and...
