Informative Speech
You will prepare and give a
ief, informative presentation which overviews a field you are interested in
pursuing as a profession (for example, nursing, teaching, accounting etc.). You may want to tell us the
history and background of the field, cu
ent opportunities, how much the field is growing (or shrinking),
what kind of salary you could expect as a professional in this field, what kind of education is necessary,
where the best opportunities are in this field, etc. You are not required to clear speech topics with me, but
you may certainly solicit my feedback if you need/want to. Your speech must be between 5 and 7 minutes
in length. Please note that, in terms of your grade, each 15 seconds you are under or over this time range
esults in a 2-point penalty. The information in your speech must come from credible, high-quality
esources, not exclusively your personal knowledge. You may not edit your speech, it must be done in
one continuous take. Editing clips together will result in a failing grade. The speech is worth 100 points
and the outline 50 points.

What Must I Produce/Submit?
You are required to turn in:
§ A detailed outline used in planning your speech, formatted according to the example in the Developing
and Delivering Effective Presentations learning module and described in the Part Five video. The
content in the outline must be written in your own words based on the research you find. Copying
sources directly or paraphrasing without crediting the sources is plagiarism whether intentional or
not. Any outline found to have plagiarized content will receive a zero. Please note this is only for
planning and may not be used during the speech. You will submit the detailed outline by
uploading it through the assignment link under. Your document must be in Microsoft Word
or PDF format, so that I can grade it within Canvas. Work not in Word or PDF format will not
eceive credit. During the speech, you should use no more than four 3x5 index notecards. Try to
include only talking points/keywords on your notecards, since having too much content on the
cards may result in poor delivery.
§ To create your speech, you will draw on reputable, credible sources of information. You will submit a
list of a minimum of four reputable references used to compile your speech, formatted in either
APA or MLA style (your choice). This should be included at the end of your detailed outline,
within the same Word or PDF document. The inclusion of sources and selecting sources is
discussed in the Part Two video in the Developing and Delivering Effective Presentations learning
module. If you need assistance with creating your reference section, please check the Informative
Speech Resources page.
§ Inclusion of references with the presentation: Additionally, you need to state your resources
throughout your speech out loud. The sources will be structured within a sentence. Mention
sources when you are using information drawn from those sources. Use the following format listed
here. For a book, say the full title and author’s name. For a periodical, mention the full title and
the date. For a website, mention the full name of the website or the actual URL, if it is not too
lengthy. Basically, give enough information so that the audience knows where you have gotten
your information and can locate these resources. A useful guide for using oral citations can be
found on the Informative Speech Resources page.
§ Deliver your speech while recording, upload the speech video, and then post the video link to the
Informative Speech assignment discussion board. Be sure to center the camera on yourself. Do
not begin speaking until you have done so. You must deliver your presentation standing up, facing
the camera, and your entire body must be visible to the camera, so that I can evaluate your delivery
effectively. If you cannot get your entire body in frame due to space limitations, do whatever seems
most practical. Dress for the speech should be at least business casual. Remember that your
dress makes a statement about your attitude towards yourself, your topic and the occasion/class.
Don’t make the wrong impression by being underdressed for your presentation. Editing of the
video is not permitted and will result in a zero. Please ensure the recording device is stable so
that I can easily view the speech. View your video prior to submitting it and ensure it functions
co
ectly once uploaded.

How Your Speech and Outline Are Evaluated
While you speak, I will evaluate you on several areas within the speech:
- Topic selected is clearly appropriate for and relevant to assignment (5 pts)

- The introduction grabs the audience’s attention (10 pts)

- A clear thesis expressing the main message can be identified (10 pts)

- The main points of the speech are apparent (5 pts)

- The main points of the speech are developed in adequate detail to cover the topic (10
pts)

- The speaker uses transitions to indicate when they are switching ideas/sections in the
speech (5 pts)

- Resources are used effectively (appropriate resources used and they are mentioned
XXXXXXXXXXthroughout speech)
(10 pts) If no resources are cited/mentioned during the speech, this
XXXXXXXXXXresults in an immediate 0 in this category.

- Speaker effectively summarizes the speech contents (10 pts)

- Closure is effectively provided and memorable (10 pts)

- Introduction (10 pts)

- Body (10 pts)

- Conclusion (10 pts)

- References (10 pts)

TITLE: VETERINARY MEDICINE: THEN AND NOW
Thesis: Veterinary medicine is a multi-faceted career that first originated thousands of years ago.
Purpose: To inform my audience about the modern-day career of veterinary medicine and its
origins.
INTRODUCTION
I. How many of you have taken your pet to see a veterinarian at some point during your
life?
A. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, or the AVMA, more
than half of U.S. households owned pets at year-end 2011, and three-quarters of
these pet-owning households made at least one visit to the veterinarian during that
year (Burns, 2013).
B. Statistics gathered by the AVMA show that in the year 2017, there were a total of
110,531 practicing veterinarians in the U.S. (“Market Research Statistics: U.S.
Veterinarians 2017”, 2018).
C. The AVMA recognizes the vital roles veterinarians play in addressing the health
and welfare needs of every species of animal, along with environmental
protection, research, food safety, and public health (“Veterinarians: Protecting the
Health of Animals and People”, n.d.).
II. Without veterinarians, many of us wouldn’t see our pets live as long and healthy lives
as they do today.
A. Veterinary medicine first originated thousands of years ago.
B. To become a veterinarian in today’s world, one must complete a long list of
educational pre-requisites.
2
C. Veterinarians have many available career options to choose from.
[Let’s take a closer look at the origins of veterinary medicine and how it came to be the
profession it is known as today.]
BODY
I. Veterinary medicine has a long and ancient history.
A. According to the article “A Quick History of Veterinary Medicine”, veterinary
medicine has its roots in the Middle East, where its existence was first recorded in
9000 B.C. (Cole, 2014)
1. A few thousand years later, Egyptians living during the time period of 4000 to
3000 B.C. began experimenting with he
s to treat domesticated animals. The
Kahun Papyrus from Egypt, dating back to 1900 B.C., has been identified as
one of the first written accounts of veterinary medicine. (Cole, 2014).
2. A Babylonian by the name of Urlugaledinna, who lived in Mesopotamia in
3000 B.C., was considered an expert in healing animals. Many other groups of
people also practiced animal medicine, including the Hindus, Arabs, He
ews,
Romans, and Greeks. In fact, the Greek scientist Alcmaeon performed animal
dissections around 500 B.C. to obtain greater knowledge about animal
anatomy and disease (Cole, 2014).
B. As stated by an article in the journal Iowa State University Veterinarian, the first
school of veterinary medicine was founded in Lyons, France in 1761 by Claude
Bourgelat ("History of Veterinary Medicine”, 1939).
1. The first class to be admitted comprised of 38 students from a variety of
European nationalities. The students were instructed on the subjects of
3
“zootomy… horsemanship, pharmacy, special pathology, surgery, and the
principles of sanitation policies” ("History of Veterinary Medicine”, 1939).
2. The school soon gained worldwide recognition and was made a Royal School
y Louis XV in 1765. Over the next 100 years, 18 more veterinary schools
were established all over Europe ("History of Veterinary Medicine”, 1939).
