Generation Z "are a highly collaborative cohort that cares deeply about others and have a pragmatic attitude about how to address a set of inherited issues like climate change"(Katz, 2022).As it is explained by Roberta Katz, a senior research scholar as Stanford, Generation Z is more of an independentgeneration, that cares for others and strives for more diversity in their community. She underlines that internet-related technologies have altered the "speed, scale and scope of human communications" which led to changes in how people interact and act in their job, in relationships, etc. Generation Z is most influenced by technological devices and spend an average time of 11 hours per week on devices, as well as steaming 23 hours of video content weekly, "almost one full day spent watching (rather than, say, reading) content"(axis.org, 2022).
I personally spend a large portion of my day on mobile devices, averaging about seven hours daily. Me, along with millions of others around my age are using social media for entertainment, making connections, sharing information, communicate with others, learn new hobbies, develop new interests, and be entertained. This is very different from other generations that did not have technological advances during their time growing up. For example, parents or grandparents have spent their time reading or playing physical games for entertainment, meeting others face to face, finding hobbies by testing out several activities, etc.
Compared to other generations, "Gen Z absorbs information in small bites and is visually oriented"(Orechwa, 2022). Technology advancements has implemented gaps in communication skills for Generation Z, and created implications for learning and understanding. For this reason, many jobs that are now hiring new Generation Z employees are offering mixed training media which is easy to use and is visually stimulating. These programs help in developing cognitive and communicationskills required in a workspace.

I am not a member of Generation Z. I am a Millennial. Since I grew up in a developing country, technology took longer to reach me, if at all. So my timeline is a little different from Chayko’s. But the internet transformed my life: one of my generation’s defining events was the“rise of the global internet”(Axis).
I used it for the first time when I was 12 years old, in an IBM store. I had been reading about “surfing the web” and the “information superhighway” in magazines. And I finally had access to it. The first thing I did was to look for websites about my favorite anime. It was not possible to watch it online, but I found so much information. I discovered forums, and started talking to and later emailing fellow fans, who became my first online friends. I was able to find a community where I could finally fit in, in a formative time in my life.“Sharing common interests in a television show […] can bring about a strong sense of shared identity and community among devotees.”(Chayko)
This also helped me improve my English greatly, because the Spanish-language internet was, and still is to some extent, not as rich, convenient, or useful.“These things are not equally available to or experienced by everyone. There are social divisions and differences”(Chayko). Eventually, this radically changed my life, as it opened several doors for me, and it was crucial in moving to the United States.
We did not use MySpace, but Hi5. For instant messaging, we had MSN Messenger, which only ran on a computer. I was able to talk to my friends for the couple of hours I paid for every week at the internet café. It was still a great way to keep in touch and have deep, interesting, long conversations that strengthened both offline and purely online relationships:“Some people get to know others better when their contact with them is primarily digital as opposed to face-to-face.”(Chayko)
I found out about Facebook around 2007, but I did not really use the site until it became popular locally. Back then, it was little more than updating your status. There were occasional pictures, but phones had terrible cameras, and there was no way to upload them directly. Smartphones were a game changer. You could now carry a computer in your pocket, look for information, and post on social media anytime. You could use GPS to find your location and navigate. Possibilities were endless. But most importantly, I was able to send free unlimited messages to friends anytime, anywhere, without the limitations of expensive carrier SMS. I could have audio and video calls to my friends all over the world for free.“The triple revolution”(Chayko) was underway.
I remember that people on the internet used to be nicer. Maybe it was the communities I was a part of, or rosy retrospection, but I saw fewer bigoted, vitriolic posts. I believe it was due to scale. Forums were relatively small, common interest communities. Chat rooms had probably a hundred people at a time. But YouTube and Facebook eventually congregated millions of followers/subscribers for massively popular pages/channels, and multitudes of complete strangers were able to converse anonymously.“The nature of the network can be altered by the number of the people in it and by its form and structure even more than its content or the specific nature of the activity”(Chayko)

Generation Z or also known as Gen Z is a group of people that are born from 1997 to 2012. They are a diverse community and are big users of technology. Their communication pace compared with others older than them is faster because of social media and the use of phones. They can find a greater appreciation of diversity(University)which I find is very true. I haven’t visited all the countries in the world. But with the help of the internet, I can research and understand the people and the culture of many countries. This has become helpful when I meet and communicate with many diverse groups of people at NJIT.
Social media can be put to good use to voice legit concerns that can be heard faster around the globe or to post informative stuff. The article(Carson)talks about the issues with Gen Z using social media platforms for reasons that aren’t important. Most youngsters' private lives are out in public and they voice concerns on the least important topics in today’s world. For example,(Carson), a tick-tock user talks about moving her part to the center and another user talks down on that style. Internet being used for these irrelevant issues is something I feel needs to be changed.
I remember my time with the internet when I was young. My family used to have a desktop and it was used to send emails, search for articles for school assignments, play games and watch movies using CDs. For most of my childhood, I spent my time reading books and playing soccer. My first entry to social media was through Facebook. Facebook was launched in 2004(Zimmermann)and I joined the platform in 2008. I joined because of peer pressure. I don’t remember the exact time I started using YouTube but it was after 2008. Currently, I do not use many social media platforms and also I am not an active user on a few except for YouTube. My peers are active users on many and one of the reasons could be because they grew up around them.
Being an active user of social media has become a norm in many parts of the world for a long time. I always wondered what would happen if all of a sudden people couldn’t access social media for 2 hrs. Chaos. Social media has influenced many people’s lives in terms of daily activities. Mine too. When I plan to purchase a product, I do check the reviews on YouTube and when I plan to watch a movie in the theatres, I do check for reviews on YouTube or Google.(Update)social media is a boon to businesses, especially small-scale ones. A handful of posts on social media and the information spreads like wildfire. I would probably know 80% of products in the world without the use of social media and also online retailers. Internet influences consumer behavior.(Nosto)Social media is part of the internet and it has a significant influence on purchasing decisions of people.

Generation Z, the latest generation to come of age, ranges from birth years of XXXXXXXXXXRaised on the internet, and modern tech, this generation lived through the rise of social media, the Great Recession, gun violence, the election of Obama and Trump, and of course, the COVID-19 pandemic.
Gen Z has been in the forefront of using the latest technology and social media. As shown in the Pew Research Center article “Social Media Use in 2021”, people ages 18-29 have been shown to use certain social media apps, such as Instagram, Twitter, and Tiktok, more than any other age group. Because of this, much of Gen Z’s identity has been centered around the internet and online presence. This means that a majority of them will spend much of their time online and curating a digital image of themselves for others to see.
However, this can also prove to cause negative effects on these young adults. The consistent use of social media can in turn cause Gen Z to start feeling more anxious or depressed when seeing other people’s posts on social media. In a study done by Giulia Fioravanti and other researchers, it was found that the feeling of missing out, or “FoMO”, was “positively correlated with depression, anxiety, and neuroticism and negatively correlated with consciousness” (Fioravanti). This negative effect on a young adult’s identity can cause them to feel more self-conscious about both their body and their social life. Seeing people having more fun than you on social media, even if it is just for show, can bring a person down.
In my own life, the rise of social media has had a huge effect on my identity and who I grew up to be. When I was around 10 or 11, I started to learn about social media, and thus would join apps such as Instagram and Pinterest. However, exposure to these apps at such a young age was not very positive for me at the time: seeing girls my own age all dressed up and having fun with their friends would make me feel upset. Even though I was barely in middle school at the time, seeing people the same age as me having fun, especially without me, made me super self conscious. Combined with not being popular at school either, social media like Instagram made me feel like a loner, something that no child should feel at such a young age.

According to most of the readings, "Generation Z" started shaping in 1997--when internet and World Wide Web were introducing their new and unbelievable findings to the world. As 'Understanding Generation Z Culture' writes in the article that, in the era of Gen Z some remarkable key events took place likeGlobal terrorism, Trump election/Brexit, Social media natives, YouTube/digital content, Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage(Axis, 2022). On the other hand, technology is one of the first aspects of the modern world that comes to mind when asking what major cultural events have shaped Millennials and Gen Z-- Gen Z was started phrasing as "digital device addicts"(Axis, 2022).
Melissa De Wittewrites in her article that, Gen Z are highly collaborative and have sharp attitude to address life change issues(2022). She also writes about how technology took place to develop Gen Z. She says, Gen Z "developed an early facility with powerful digital tools that allowed them to be self-reliant as well as collaborative. Similarly, because they could learn about people and cultures around the globe from an early age, they developed a greater appreciation for diversity and the importance of finding their own unique identities"(2022). In this manner I quite agree with her because when I hear or discuss issues on other cultures and diversity with my parents, I somewhat get an arrogant tone for some cultures or for some parts of the world, and the reason behind that is they might were not used to see the diverse culture when they grew up. As,Melissawrote in the article that because of the internet, kids know about different culture and their values from their childhood and which make them very collaborative(2022).
Considering political views,Kim and Ruthwrites in their article that Gen Z have very different political views which are widely based on their lives, earnings, and work environment(2020). APew Research Center surveyconducted in January of this year found that about a quarter of registered voters ages 18 to 23 (22%) approved of how Donald Trump is handling his job as president, while about three-quarters disapproved (77%)(Kim & Ruth, 2020).
Additionally, when considering Web History Timeline until the year of 2000, most people got familiar with the world of Internet. The dot-com bubble bursts. Websites such as Yahoo! and eBay are hit by a large-scale denial of service attack, highlighting the vulnerability of the Internet(Kim & Jesse, 2022). Where on the other side until the year of 2019, 13% of the world's population didn't have regular access to the electricity, and internet(text).
To summarize, Gen Z are most diverse, collaborative, knowledgeable, quick learner and tech specials. These abilities help them to their selves better and also to understand others.
