13
Other key information
• All answers should be written in the first person (just as a cu
iculum vitae / job
application would be) using a short answer structure (ie. TEEL paragraph)
• Your Portfolio must be submitted by the due date in two ways:
i. MyShowcase.me (in the My Knowledge Map [MKM] program) – live demo at 1pm,
Monday 16 May
ii. Turnitin - this must be a Word document with identical text cut and pasted from
your MyShowcase.me submission (for similarity-checking purposes, and for
written feedback)
• Both submissions must use Arial or Times New Roman font, size 12, double-spacing,
no titles
• Both submissions must include a Reference List (MyShowcase.me requires this
uploaded on a separate tile; Turnitin requires a separate page)
• A minimum of three scholarly references is required (for the whole Portfolio, not for
each question); you must include one book, one journal article, one NMBA document
14
2. Constructing short-answer responses
Each question in your Portfolio is to be answered in a complete paragraph
(ie. no dot points or bullet points; it is not an essay).
Writing a clear and concise paragraph
• A paragraph begins with a topic sentence (which uses key words from the question),
followed by the body, which develops one idea only;
• This idea will be supported by further explanation, evidence, examples (in the form of
data, paraphrases or direct quotes from reliable sources, which will be cited by using
co
ect in-text references in APA7 style);
• All points raised within the paragraph will relate to the same topic;
• The paragraph will conclude with a linking sentence, which could summarise the key
points, link back to the question, or highlight the implication/importance of an idea;
• TEEL paragraph structure is Topic / Elaborate / Examples & Evidence / Link

Question:
What is one personal characteristic that you believe is an essential skill for a nurse?
Sample answer:
Self-awareness is one of the essential skills I believe a nurse must possess. Self-awareness means
that nurses must avoid stereotypical ideas about other cultures and refrain from imposing their
personal beliefs upon their patient. This skill can be acquired through ongoing education and self-
eflection. It is also one of the requirements listed in the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia’s
(NMBA) National Competency Standards for the Registered Nurse, which states that nurses must
uphold the codes of ethics and conduct specific to their profession, within their practise at all times
(NMBA, XXXXXXXXXXTaking part in ongoing education and reflection is an important part of the continual
self-awareness which enables adherence to codes of ethics. For example, I have recently learned that
the cultural practices of Aboriginal and To
es Strait Islander people when faced with the death of a
family or community member are different from my own personal experiences; this has necessitated
personal reflection about my nursing practice in these situations, and what I may need to change as a
consequence of my new awareness. Thus, as a result of self-reflection and professional
development, nurses can provide a high standard of patient-centred care.

According to Ni
elink and Brewer (2018), nurses deal with a wide range of high-pressure situations that need a wide range of experience and talents. When making important decisions, many nurses rely on a set of values to guide them. This will assist them in meeting certain performance needs in specific instances. Nursing values are the criteria and ideas by which I am performing high-quality and ethical work. In many sectors of healthcare, nursing organizations and many nurses provide excellent care, comfort, and support. They share common principles, such as a commitment to treating people with dignity. Nurses will be able to care for their patients more effectively if they share these ideas with their healthcare team.
2.
Culturally competent nursing care demands a global approach. When I work as a nurse, I make every effort to respect the many cultures I encounter while caring for patients. More than merely accepting the customs and cultures...
