Introduction
The eating disorders are known to develop into serious mortality and even cause sudden death in people. It can result in cardiovascular diseases, hypoglycaemia and severe mental issues. Hence, eating disorders needs to be taken seriously and proper treatment should be adopted by individuals suffering from it. The cu
ent assignment will discuss about these aspects in detail and reflect on relationships with patients as well as the care providers.
Section 1:
1A. Chosen Mental Health Issue: Eating Disorders
Definition
Eating disorder is defined as a range of psychological disorders and is characterized by abnormal eating habits. The symptoms associated with eating disorders vary among people to people and the warning signs does not always fit into categories.
Symptoms and Statistical Prevalence in Ireland
There are several types of eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder (BED), otherwise specified eating or binging disorder (OSEBD), Avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID). The symptoms involves extreme weight loss as seen in Anorexia nervosa, whereas BED is associated with recu
ent episodes of excessive eating thereby ending up feeling guilty or shameful (Davidson et al. 2019). As many as 305 cases of people having anorexia nervosa were reported in the last 8 months surveillance in Ireland and majority of such cases were observed in women (91%). The peak onset is estimated in age group of 16-19 years (Fa
ington, Huntley‐Moore and Donohue, 2020).
1B. Mental Health Services and Support Programs Available in Ireland for Eating Disorders
Voluntary and Non-Voluntary Organisations
According to Sacchetti et al. (2019), eating disorders (ED) are a result of emotional problems and they are known to express high levels of alexithymia, which is an inability to label emotions. St. Patrick’s Mental Health Services provides special attention and care to the treatment of people with eating disorders. The programme utilises a team of health professionals and skilled personnel as carers to tend to the people suffering from eating disorders (St. Patrick’s Mental Health Services, 2021). Each patient has a unique treatment programme that is tailored according to every individual’s needs.
The services that are offered are seamless and treatment involves a multidisciplinary team to look after patient’s needs. The services provided are for the eating disorders that are most commonly encountered such as for adults suffering from anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, OSFED and BED. An individual care plan is formulated according to the medical, psychological and nutritional needs of the patient. The initial plan of care includes monitoring of mental issues, health issues, meal plan review as well as diet plan review.
There are several mental service programs, which are available for treating eating disorders such as—
· Meal support therapy,
· Consultant led diagnostic evaluation,
· Cognitive behavioural therapy for eating disorders (CBT-E),
· Recreational programs,
· Family support programmes and education,
· Psychological assessment and intervention,
· Monitoring dietary uptake,
· Occupational therapy
· Other hospital based therapeutic programs such as depression and anxiety treatment programmes, distress programmes and pottery skill based programmes
According to Clus et al. (2018), psychotherapy in patients with eating disorders is the best form of cognitive behavioural therapy and the choice of treatment is based upon the person’s age and the progressed stage of the disease. CBT focuses on the negative thinking patterns of an individual and helps them in teaching how to identify and control the same by making individuals to cope with their emotional problems.
