Introduction  
Managed care is a health management event implemented in USA for optimum utilization of 
health resources; the main objective behind executing this system was reduction of health 
care cost and increasing its access for all. Managed care is an employer based and indemnity 
insurance based system that control both patient and doctor choices. Actual implementation 
of managed care system in USA can be traced back since 1973. This paper has been written 
with the aim of analyzing changes caused by this event in the health care system of USA, it 
will also include information on historical evolution of the concept and its present 
significance in the market.  
Managed care impacted the historical evolution of health care  
The need of managed health care system started since twentieth century; at that time there 
was no social or financial protection was available to the people in USA in form of insurance, 
later on since mid twentieth century employers started giving some health care benefits to 
their employees. Since then, importance of health care insurance was realized by the people 
but it was strongly connected with employers as state government was not giving any 
assistance to its people before 65 years of age. Later on for costly treatments the concept of 
group insurance emerged in the market, in which people come together and pay premium 
jointly. Sadly, till 2005 large population of the region (almost 15 percent) had no insurance 
(Navvarao & Cahill, n.d.).  
Managed care event has cause evolution in the health care system of US by providing better 
health services in the market, controlling exploitation and misuse of medical resources and 
reducing cost.
