SANTA MONICA INTRO
SECTION ONE: Impacts of Health and Social Services (Section is worth 20 Points)
1. Location and History of Community or population chosen ( i.e., when did the parish
program or clinic or homeless shelter start and who started it?)
I am choosing St. Monica Catholic Community in California state from the perspective of
parish communities thereof. It was established in year 1886 after Saint Monica known for her
Christian virtues. This parish was earlier located on the Third Street Promenade located between
Santa Monica Blvd and Arizona Avenue. Fr. Patrick Hawe served as the parish resident pastor
under whom the community flourished till 1923 when he died. His successor was Monsignor
Nicholas Conneally who served until 1949 and oversaw shift to new present venue.
Under its wings, two schools, viz., 'St. Monica Catholic Elementary School' and 'St.
Monica Catholic High School' were formed in 1899 and 1901 respectively. In 1899, first the
elementary school for kindergarten till 8th grade was established and staffed four Sisters. In
1901, a high school was started was named Academy of the Holy Names. In 1930, the
elementary school was christened St. Monica Parish Elementary School as also transfe
ed to 7th
Street. The faculty consisted of 5 sisters and 2 priests in initial year and the first graduating class
had twenty students; 17 girls and 3 boys. The community grew as also the infrastructure around
the church until St. Monica occupied the entire city block. A new Community Center is presently
under cnstruction and is expected to be ready by the fall of 2013.
2. Determine what geographical area your Community Assessment should consider.
I am choosing the nea
y regions of St. Monica Catholic church, i.e., Santa Monica,
California. Zipcodes are 90401–90411.
3. Vital and Demographic Statistics of the Community in General
a. Population density: 10,662.6 people/square mile. The population density is quite
mild and people live in quite good conditions.
. Population composition (gender, age, and race distribution and ethnic origin):
There is a good mix of genders with females outnumbering males. Also there is a healthy mix of
aces to make for a cosmopolitan population.
• Male: 43,284 (48.23%) & Females: 46,452 (51.77%)
Population Numbers Percentage

populace around the region. The facilities and services cover special ability patients, pharmacies,

SECTION TWO: Impacts of Economics and Physical Environment (20 Points)
1. Physical Elements (Windshield Survey of the Community)
a. Natural resources including geography, climate, te

Santa Monica region enjoys a moderate Medite

Santa Monica Bay. In summer months of May, June & July the region gets morning fog which is
known popularly as "May/June Gray or Groom" and that gets over by afternoon due to
afternoon sun. Generally the beach temperature is 3-6 degrees Celsius cooler than inland.
Highest temperatures are common in September while october onwards is the rainy season.
Yearly rainfall is quite unpredictable as years with good rains are occasionally followed by
drought years. There is no snow in the region but it enjoys cool
eezes blowing in from the
ocean making the air fresh and clean. From September to November smog is blown from inland
towards beaches.
