Impact of Hospitalization        2
THE IMPACT OF
HOSPITALIZATION ON A PATIENT AND/OR THEIR FAMILY
Impact on the patient
A patient dealing with metal illness faces a lot of challenges while seeking help. The patients and their families undergo a lot of challenges in the process. People dealing with acute mental health condition go through mental
eakdowns and it impacts their daily life as well as the lifestyle of their family members. Therefore, it is very important to understand the situation of the family and how it impacts their regular lifestyle (Lee et al., 2021). From the first scenario it has been understood that Liam is a 16-year-old patient diagnosed with chronic anxiety and he has eating disorders and sleeping disorders that has affected his day-to-day lifestyle. From the assessment it has been diagnosed that he is undergoing medications and counselling in a local medical centre but recently he has been admitted to a hospital for expert medical care for mental illness. Judging his family background, it has been understood that he lives with his mother's step
other and stepfather.
Many people under the circumstances face powerlessness in a family setup where they do not have complete support of the family. The incident that caused hospitalization has been a chronic status, which means it has been a gradual effect of chronic anxiety. Continuous process of i
egular eating and sleeping activities, distance from close relatives, power struggles and inability to function in a proper family setup have deteriorated his mental and physical condition (Chia et al., 2021). Acute anxiety collapses the body and it causes serious pressure on the mind and body of the patient. This requires emergency medical assistance. Most patients dealing with mental illness try to keep it hidden, hospitalization reveals the issues, causing stigma and shame to the patient (Gutié
ez‐Valencia et al., 2017). Liam has been feeling depressed and confused due to the hospitalization and lack of family support.
The patient may feel anxious and depressed due to the seriousness of the situation. The boiling anger for not being able to protect oneself from the acute situation is confusing and increases the rage in the patient. There are many times when Liam feels scared to the unknown facts of the illness and it confuses them more. Monetary issues are one of the major factors when it comes to seeking mental health...
