INTRODUCTION
Recovery is a process of returning back to normal condition of mental health, regaining the control of cognitive capability (Caldwell, Sclafani, Swa
ick & Piren,2010). It is fully personal and highly unique phenomenon and the extent of recovery varies from person to person. Recovery involves an attitude of living a hopeful and contributing life while still being in a state of melancholy. The methods used to recover from mental illness must include both the personal and clinical strategies to utilize the potential of the patient to the maximum extent (State of Victoria, 2018).
Firstly, this essay will elaborate the concept of mental health and illness. Secondly, it will illustrate the Recovery in terms of mental health. Thirdly, the essay will analyze the key ideas from National framework for recovery-oriented mental health services. Lastly, it will present certain examples from the writings of Sandy Jeffs and will recommend how the healthcare workers may involve recovery-oriented principles to improve the condition of mental illness.
THE CONCEPT OF LIVED EXPERIENCE
Generally, the mentally ill patients are stigmatized and self-conscious about their problem(Knaak et al,2017). According to study in 2016, it was found that around 3% people in Australia are mentally ill (Mikesell et al,2016) with half of them living in a state of bipolar disorder, and rest of them live with anxiety and depression. It was found that in Australia, the most common reason for mental retardation is Schizophrenia which accounts for 47% mentally ill people (Mikesell et al,2016).
The patients are found to be dependent on alcohol intake or smoking to cope with their mental trauma. In the research, around 39% females and 58% males with mental illness are found to be addicted to smoking and alcoholism (Stanton et al,2017). Mental inefficiency isolates them from their peer groups, their self-esteem diminishes and they lose their occupations as they are unable to work efficiently. They experience hopeless, defeated, ill morale, purposeless and meaningless life. In certain distant marginal communities, there is no access to medical assistance and people have no facility of psychiatric treatment. Many of them are unaware of it (Knaak et al,2017).
Consequently, mental illness renders dysfunction to adult family members and adversely affects their daily routine. It distu
s the whole family and friend circle which supports the mentally ill person after postponing their routine activities and ignoring their own issues of concern (Mikesell et al, 2016).
THE CONCEPT OF RECOVERY
According to mentally ill people, recovery means achieving and retaining a positive outlook, identifying your own capabilities, efficiently performing routine activities and living a purposeful, socially acceptable and meaningful life (Stanton et al,2017). Recovery is not just the cure. It includes improvement in internal and external belief system of the patient. Internal processes of mentally ill people include distu
ing thoughts, restlessness, fear, low self-esteem and inability to do anything. The recovery involves moving towards the stability of thoughts, strong self-confidence, positive outlook, fearlessness, healing and empowerment. The external elements of personality involve ability to do daily activities, job, cognitive awareness, ability to participate in any discussion, helping others, etc (Knaak et al,2017). The mentally ill patient is not capable of performing any external processes (Mikesell et al, 2016). The personal recovery procedure slowly takes the patient towards positivity and normal conduct through the implementation of recovery mediated support. Mentally ill people need timely assessment, family assistance, and effective healthcare support (Matthial et al,2012).
The healthcare professionals are expected to create a strong relationship with these patients to mediate effective recovery, confidence building and to help the patient in achieving a realistic personal recovery level. This patient-centered relationship is the basis of faster recovery leading to self-sufficiency, minimizing the dependence...
