Ba
iers and Challenges to Treating Pain
The main ba
iers to pain treatment belong to six categories: Healthcare provider’s training and attitude, magnitude of the health issue, coverage of health insurance, patient’s cultural background, regulatory and geographical ba
iers.
Most of the patients experience pain due to ineffective treatment of their chronic diseases. The healthcare professionals might not consider the pain as so serious problem. According to the reports of the Department of Veterans Affairs, 73% clinicians regarded the chronic pain as a big source of frustration for them. Sometimes the unavailability of medical facilities in rural areas also deprive the patients of availing treatment for chronic pain. The regulatory policies restricting the access to opioid analgesics may also make some clinicians fearful of prescribing them (IOM, 2011).
Treating Chronic Pain with Pharmacologic and Non-Pharmacologic Methods
The pharmacological methods of pain relievers include antidepressants, anticonvulsants, acetaminophen and nonsteroid anti-inflammatory drugs. These treatments can be provided through tablets or injections. The Non Pharmacological methods involve Exercise regimens, acupuncture, dietary supplements, trans-cutaneous electrical stimulations and cognitive behavioral treatments (Atkinson, Patel & Keltner, 2016).
Benefits: The Pharmacological interventions give immediate relief from the chronic pain. They are also effective in treating the root cause of illness-causing chronic pain. However, every medication has certain side effects if administered in more than the desired amount.
Drawbacks: The Non-Pharmacological Interventions are prescribed in addition to the medicines. They are effective in the treatment of chronic pain along with the medicines but not alone. As their impact becomes evident after a certain duration of time, they cannot be used to relieve the pain immediately.
