Property rights situation is miserable in Pakistan. Approximately 70% population of Pakistan resides in rural areas, among which approximately 74% are poor people. Poverty is highly prevalent among these rural poor people; and is estimated as greatest amidst resident renters and agricultural laborers. Poverty in Pakistan is strongly co
elated with landlessness. As per a study by World Bank, only 2% of households in Pakistan own more than 45% of all land, critically compelling struggle and competition in livelihood opportunities and agriculture.
Various studies have observed that poverty in the country is soaring (54%) amongst the landless, stating that only 0.08% of families in Pakistan possess more than 2 hectares of land. The unfair and disproportionate land allotment is the predominant display of poverty in rural Pakistan (Kousar et al.). Different studies have indicated that increase in impoverished and property less people, power and authority exerted by the landed class and the government’s incompetence to deliver justice and oppressive treatment of customary and religious authorities have promoted strong dissatisfaction between the rural poor in the country.
