Introduction
Sharks play numerous critical functions in the ocean, influencing it for decades. These organisms are essential to ocean health as well as the well-being of large numbers of people around the world due to the food, subsistence, and tourism options they provide. According to a recent study, overfishing has put over one-third of all shark species at risk of becoming extinct. Sharks reproduce very slowly compared to other animals, increasing their vulnerability to overfishing. Governments and local fishing entities must act early to avoid overfishing and a mass extinction problem (Bradley et al., 2018).
This paper emphasizes the problem of overfishing sharks, its impact on the environment and humans, and possible solutions to address this issue.
Issues
Every year, up to 73 million sharks have been killed by the commercial fishing trade around the world, and the percentage is rapidly increasing. With oceans covering more than 70 percent of the Planet, sea creatures, as well as the general well-being of marine life, are critical for human survival elsewhere on the globe, but overfishing is threatening the fate of both land and ocean dwellers. Overfishing of shark species in the Cari
ean causes a domino impact of variations in abundance that affects several species of fish and leads to significant deterioration of the reef ecosystem (Dulvy et al., 2021).
Once overfishing is done, a chain reaction of events can occur, resulting in the depletion of essential plant grazers. Since there is a lower count of sharks to survive on carnivorous fish like grouper, the quantity and capacity to feast on pa
