Introduction
The Indigenous Australians are primarily from two groups, namely To
es Strait Islanders which originated from To
es Strait islands and the Aboriginal people hailing from the entire continent of Australia. The people have distinct cultures, traditions, customs, histories and languages. Due to their lifestyle and unique traditions, the Indigenous Australians suffer from a number of health issues. These people are more prone to heart disease and diabetes. It has also been observed that apart from physical ailments, the Aboriginal people tend to suffer from a number of mental problems. From a number of studies, it has been found out that Aboriginal Australians are more likely to suffer from psychological distress in comparison to the Australians. The report explores the health issues of the Aboriginal Australians, while stressing on a particular scenario. It will also include recommendations that can be included by the public health interventions in order to treat the health issues that most affect the people of Indigenous Australia.
Context of Potential Health Issue for Population
The scenario provides information related to the life of Waru, who was born and raised in Kalkadoon. It is a county in Mount Isa of Queensland, which is also known as ‘Elite of the Aboriginal wa
iors of Queensland’. Waru, since his very childhood, lived in Kalkadoon, where he was raised in a good and caring family. The community also lived quite harmoniously together. Initially, the family earned its livelihood through activities such as fishing and working on their family garden. Along with that, Waru and his friends took English lessons in a small local school. However, with the passage of time, Waru’s father began suffering from cardiac diseases, while her mother became prone to diabetes. As a result of this, Waru was forced to leave his hometown for the city in search of a high salary paying job in order to pay the medical bills. Waru also suffered from back pain due to his strenuous workload. Later, it has also been mentioned that both Waru and his wife Yindi suffered from psychological distress due to the nature of their city lifestyle.
A number of health issues can be identified from the scenario that has been provided. It has been observed by the scholars Calma, Dudgeon and Bray (2017), that the Aboriginal Australians suffer a great deal from heart diseases and diabetic problems. Apart from that, due to their extreme workload, they suffer from bodily pain. Waru’s father suffer from heart disease while his mother is prone to diabetes. Both Waru and his wife Yindi go through psychological turmoil due to a number of social issues and the modern city lifestyle, to which they are not acquainted properly. From the scenario, it can be gathered that the people residing in the cities of Australia also suffer from obesity due to their lack of activities, as it can be observed in case of Yindi.
