In Miranda July’s Birthmark, a self-conscious lady has laser surgery to remove a birthmark she has loathed since childhood for it is her only element of ‘imperfection’. Soon after, other imperfections start cropping up, such as her Norwegian accent which no one previously paid attention to.  Consequently, she increasingly becomes unhappy, as she does not get what she had envisioned what removing the stain would bring to her-appreciation from others. She attempts to fill the void in her life and loveless marriage with material possessions, mid century furniture, and colourless conversations, but the emptiness persists.
When the lady accidentally gets a jam stain on her neck and face, memories of her port-wine stain flood back. She concludes that the ‘stain ‘had always been there only her perception had changed thus she regains her happiness. From the story,
