Key quotes that I think are important to understand and think about:
“A woman’s sexuality is often not her own.” (p.67)
“Although we’ll use the sexual orientation terminology of heterosexual/homosexual/ bisexual/lesbian, terminology varies considerably cross-cuturally and, in many places, there are no categories or concepts that include nonheterosexual sexuality, or only derogatory terms for people who don’t fit traditional sexuality norms (Herdt, 1997; Laboy, Sandort, & Yi, 2009)."
“…Queer theory opposes sexuality classifications as artificial, limiting, and inadequate, and instead focuses on challenging heteronormativity, the assumption that heterosexuality is the one and only way to be human (Butler, 1990; Cohen, 2005; Herdt, 1997).” (p. 72)
“Just as it it true that most feminists are not lesbians, it is also true that most lesbians are not feminists. Yes, it is true that lesbianism can be a feminist political statement and identity, … But feminism is not the usual motivator of lesbianism. … Lesbians, like heterosexual women, are diverse in their feminism and vary in their awareness of women’s issues and in their activism for women’s equality.” (p. 73)
This film is made by the IPPF -- the International Planned Parenthood Federation. They are a nongovernmental organization (NGO) that works worldwide for women's rights to reproductive health care. As sexual issues have come out more into the open in recent decades and the issues have become more controversial because of rapid social and cultural changes, the IPPF has moved into taking positions on sexual rights.
Building on our module on reproductive health, rights, and justice, you will see a lot of connections here between sexuality and those issues!
This documentary is about 20 minutes long -- it is very well produced. You can turn on subtitle in the settings area of YouTube for this video.

Sexual Rights Approach:
people experience and express their sexuality in diverse ways.
“Sexual Rights” is a new idea…
Emerging term that has become more visible since the middle of the first decade of 2000s
Not in CEDAW and not found in the 1995 Beijing Platform per se
– Although Article 96 includes control of own sexuality
Now used by the World Health Organization (WHO)
