Australians consume a lot of dietary energy, as well as many prudent and ultra-processed foods and fewer amounts of nutritious foods from all five categories of food (Lawrence et al. 2009). The Health Star Rating (HSR) system was an initiative by the Australian Government in 2014, to provide health ratings for packaged foods and beverages. It is usually found on the front cover of the food packet or beverage. The food product is rated from half a star to five stars depending on their nutritive value per 100gm or 100ml and the more the stars the healthier is the product.
If I was the national health minister I would have not implemented the health star rating system. This is because, in reality, it seems that the HSR system contributes to public health risks by unwittingly promoting instead of discouraging discretionary food choice. The use of nutrient-based scoring algorithms obscures the ability to distinguish between nourishing and discretionary foods...
