Introduction
Depression is alone of the most common mental illness identified in the world. Annually 300 million people are affected by depression as indicated World Health Organization. It is the major reason for disability and the cause of the global burden in the world. It is also found from research that women are more affected by depression than men in the world (Depression, 2019). It is important that psychological and pharmacological treatment of depression is provided on time to prevent any more severe health consequences. This report will address the depression among Australian women between the ages of 18-65 years of age. The report will also discuss in depth the implications of the condition and provide intervention strategies to mitigate the situation.
Section 1: Understanding Depression within Australian women between 18-65 years
Depression can cause severe mental illness and other associated como
idities that might lead to suicidal thoughts. It was estimated by WHO 800,000 people die due to suicide annually from depression and other associated mental illness. Suicide is the second most commonly observed cause of death among the 15-29-year-olds (Depression, 2019). The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) showed that 1 in every 11 people resulting in about 8.9% of the population is diagnosed with depression and other related mental health issues in Australia. In this regard, the female population of Australia are more likely to develop depressive symptoms resulting in 10.4% compared to 7.4% of males in Australia. The reporting age of the depression and seeking medical support is observed to be during 55-64 years of age. Out of the 13.7% reported cases of depression, females consisted of the majority of the patient population (Mental and Behavioural Conditions, 2019). It was also observed in a more recent survey that one in every 6 women are affected by depression and associated mental illness. It is also more likely that women undergo anxiety at least once in their lifetime compared to the male Australian. It was pointed out that depression, as well as anxiety, are most commonly observed in women during pregnancy and the year following the birth of the baby (Beyond Blue, 2019). Postnatal depression is common in 1 in every 6 women in Australia. Similarly, 1 in every 10 women is observed to be depressed during pregnancy. In consideration of the disparity of depression within genders, as it is critical in determining the mental health and illness. WHO also pointed out that by 2020, unipolar depression will be the second most common disability in women globally. The global disability of psychological disorders is related to depression where the contribution of the dependency in alcohol; 1 in every 12 women is the determinant of health. As per the Housing Income and Labour Dynamics (HILDA) Survey, the age of a group of women diagnosed with depression between 15-34 years of age have increased from 12.8% is 2009 to 20.1% as of 2017 (Ward, 2019).
