Length: 6-8 DOUBLE SPACED PAGES USING APA 7 FORMATTING

Note: This paper can be completed individually or as a PAIR (2). If completing with 2 people, only

Rationale: Supporting the mental health and wellbeing of children and youth is at the forefront
of Child and Youth Care. Child and Youth Care practitioners working with children
and youth with mental illness are advocates amongst the societal backdrop in
which they live. Promotion of advocacy involves challenging societal stigma on
multiple levels – including the language of stigma that may be presented in the
media. Awareness of the public perception of mental illness can assist in
ecoming an advocate for the young people that are served by the Child and Youth
Care practitioner.

Purpose: Your task will be to research and write about how the influence of the media
provides information to the public. You will address a particular topic or topics
elated to mental health and illness by using a critical lens in the discussion that
addresses not only the relevance but also may contribute to the public perception
of mental illness.

In this assignment you will describe how media platforms may contribute to the
public perception and examine media influences. You will evaluate and critique
these findings and then provide relevant research that supports your evaluation of
these media sources.

Expectations/
Steps: 1) Identify general information about public perceptions of mental health and
illness. Find researched information that addresses these perceptions and

Introduction
Public stigma consists of a set of negative attitudes and beliefs that make people to reject, avoid, discriminate and fear people with mental illness. This kind of stigma is related to lack of knowledge in metal health and illness. Public stigma also creates reduced autonomy, self-efficacy, discrimination and segregation. For an example, people with mental illness are prone to experience employment and housing discrimination or homelessness compared to people without any mental health issue. Moreover, rigid beliefs about the competency of people with mental issues disrupt their financial state, deprive them from various opportunities and may lead to abusive treatment and less independence in society.
The Impact of Media on Public Perceptions regarding Mental Illness
For the most part, mass media influences our ideas and ways in which we perceive those around us (Roy et al., 2020). For the people suffering from mental health issues, the implications of the negative and inaccurate representation of mental illness are significant. Wrong information in the media regarding mental health issues, even though the representation is positive, results in misinterpretation that may have considerable and real consequences. For an example, improper representation of schizophrenia (often confused in the mass media with split personality) can result in conflict, confusion, false beliefs and a delay in receiving medical treatment. Unlike physical health issues, many mental issues are associated with the social stigma. Dealing with this shame can be very debilitating. It can interfere with daily living of an individual whether it is self-directed or acquired from the society. It is a common notion that prejudice and fear will always influence negatively and make the society judgmental towards the mentally ill (Yadav, 2020).
There is an invisible ba
ier separating the mentally ill from the so-called normal society. The challenged ones are pushed towards the verge of
eakdown. Negative and misinterpreted depictions can prolong what the common mass thinks about the mentally challenged individuals. This eternal intolerance and oppression of the public affect the mentally ill negatively. The mental fa
ic of the society is embedded with negative impressions and hence cannot alter the conscience and portray sensationalism that can allow them to differentiate the disable from violence (Logan, 2018). It is a common believe that the mentally ill are dangerous and is capable of causing harm for the other people. This thought separates the ill from the so-called normal people. Browsing through one such video that show the adversaries of a mentally sick person can make people hide in their shelters in fear of being harmed.
Summary of the movie, ‘A Beautiful Mind’
The movie revolves around John Nash, the protagonist of the story. He a
ives at the Princeton University as a co-recipient in 1947, along with Martin Hansen, who received a scholarship for mathematics from Carnegie. The plot gradually reveals him and his fellow graduates of math and science, Ainsley, Sol and Bender along with his roommate Charles Harmen, from the literature department sitting in the bar. They are talking about...
