Proper nutrient intake plays a critical role in the prevention and /or treatment of many chronic conditions and diseases. The presence and bioavailability of specific nutrients can play a vital role in the condition’s progression.
Healthcare professionals approach a person’s nutrient needs through the eyes of their training. For instance, an occupational therapist may see a patient who had a stroke and assess if the neurological deficits impacted the patient’s ability to self –feed. For the same patient a speech therapist may be concerned with the patient’s difficulties with swallowing certain food textures. A team approach is often best practice.
For your final project, you are being asked to investigate the effect a disease state has on nutritional status and the role of a healthcare professional in its treatment or intervention.
Step 1:
Choose a wellness or healthcare profession in which the condition will be approached. Examples include: physical therapist, occupational therapist, RN, speech therapist, registered dietitian, exercise physiologist, athletic trainer, etc.
Step 2:
Select a chronic condition or disease state. Examples include- but are not limited to:
Diabetes Mellitus (Type I/Type II)
Chronic Renal failure (kidney disease)
Inflammatory Bowel disease
Crohn’s disease
Alcoholism
Gestational diabetes
Anorexia Nervosa (or other eating disorder)
Celiac Disease
Failure to thrive (Patients under the age of 18 yrs old)
A competitive athlete
Step 3: Content
Define and describe the disease or condition, present the known cause/s, typical treatment and its impact on the nutritional status of the person. What is the role of the healthcare professional in the treatment or intervention?
Consider:
How does the disease effect food intake, digestion or absorption of nutrients?
What specific nutrients are at risk?
How would you determine the person’s nutrient needs?
What is the current dietary intervention for the disease?
How is adequate nutritional balance achieved/maintained (Be specific with the food recommendations)?
What nutrition education should be given to the patient/family?
What is the role of the (chosen professional)?
Reference:
**You will need to reference a minimum of 3 peer review journal articles to support your background information and claims of nutritional treatment.
Step 4:
Written Report: Your report should be a minimum of 5 -7 pages- typed double- spaced. Graphics do not count towards report length.
