PROJECT OVERVIEW

As the medical assistant begins an encounter with a patient, awareness of cultural differences and other problems that may inhibit communication is important. Any number of situations may arise that the medical assistant must be prepared to address.

Different cultures may have distinctive views on medicine and medical procedures. Patients from different cultures may react differently to procedures in the medical office. The medical assistant will overcome major obstacles if he or she knows that the patient does not speak English as a first language, or if the patient is from a culture in which the female patient does not disrobe for a male physician.

In this assignment you will do the following:

  • Select a culture that is different from your own and research the culture's views of medical care.
  • Write a four-page (minimum) paper, comparing and contrasting your culture's views on medical care to the culture's views you selected.
  • Cite a minimum of two sources substantiating the views. All sources must be cited on a bibliography page.

Organize the paper as follows:

Section 1 -Give an overview about how heredity, culture, and environment can all influence patient behavior in the medical office. Then focus on culture and state which culture you selected to research and why. List the culture’s overall view of healthcare.

Section 2 -Compare and contrast the views of your chosen culture regarding healthcare to your own culture’s views. You should have a minimum of four different viewpoints/topics you compare and contrast.

Section 3 -Express your opinion about why a medical assistant should adapt to a patient’s individualized needs based on your research of a different culture’s views of health care. Identify how, as a medical assistant, you could adjust your interpersonal communication techniques to demonstrate sensitivity to other’s cultural beliefs.

A Comparison of Various Cultural Beliefs

Introduction
There are different cultures in the globe and, each culture views health care differently. It is
very important to understand these cultural differences before starting the treatment in case of
inter-cultural health care. A health care giver would be able to communicate better only if the
health care giver understands the biases involved in the culture the patient comes from
(Wieland, 1994). Each culture defines healthcare in individual ways. For some superstitious
eliefs gives way to health care while for some others it is pure science. Some consider their
elders to have the right to choose health care while some are independent. If the care giver is
unaware of such cultural differences, he might cause trauma to the patient and his family.
Influence of Culture, Heredity and Environment on Patient Care
There are diverse cultures and, environment across the globe and, each one differs from the
other in their health beliefs. Culture is defined as a non-physical collection of the various
values, beliefs, perceptions, customs, traditions, practices, influencers, family structures etc.
for a particular region. If a person belongs to a particular culture, he/she is conditioned to
ehave and act according to the norms of the culture. That ethnic race defines them

espective of their place of up
inging. Race, ethnicity, heredity and, genetics are all
interlinked to culture. In many ways culture defines that one gene that causes a lot of health
care related beliefs. What is called genomics scientifically refers to the beliefs set in the
minds of people because of the culture and race they belong to.
A very classic example would be of the Americans vs. the Asians. For a lot of Asians, the
oldest male member of the family has the authority to take action in any given case. Also, for
many Asians, their patient care structure believes in God over science or, one can say religion
over science. For, Americans the health care belief is completely scientific. Their technology
commands science and, their health care involves scientific reasoning and structure. When
each of these cultures enters into the other for health care, it is very important that the care
giver understands the culture they belong to before prescribing the cure.
Also, health care is perceived by the patients as per their cultures (Galanti,...
