XXXXXXXXXXSTUDY OVERVIEW
USING A VIDEO SIMULATION, PARTICIPANTS HAD TO DECIDE WHETHER OR NOT TO SHOOT BLACK OR WHITE VIRTUAL “SUSPECTS” THAT APPEARED ON THE SCREEN WITH OR WITHOUT A WEAPON.
“Participants were instructed that any armed target posed an imminent threat and should be shot as quickly as possible. Unarmed targets posed no threat and should be flagged accordingly by pushing the don’t shoot button, again as quickly as possible” (Across The Thin Blue Line).

INDEPENDENT VARIABLE
KEY:
C (criterion)
A reading at Zero (0) shows that there is no greater tendency to push the shoot over the don’t shoot response
When the reading (bar graph) goes in a positive direction over zero, it shows a bias favoring the don’t shoot response.
When the reading goes in negative direction from zero, it shows a bias favoring to shoot.
KEY:
d’ (sensitivity)
Shows how sensitive the participant was in believing that the target had a weapon
PARTICIPANTS
3 GROUPS
124 DENVER POLICE OFFICERS
127 CIVILIANS FROM THE DENVER AREA WHERE THOSE POLICE PATROL
113 POLICE OFFICERS FROM AROUND THE NATION
RESULTS
The participants were relatively equally able to differentiate between armed and unarmed targets no matter what the race of the target was, however,
the civilian participants showed more of a bias in favor of the “SHOOT” response when the target was black than did the police officers.
THE RESULTS SHOW THAT PARTICIPANTS’ BEHAVIOR AND RESPONSES ORIGINATE FROM PREJUDICES, STEREOTYPES AND BIAS THAT THEY MAY OR MAY NOT EVEN BE AWARE THEY HAVE.
THIS IS RELEVANT TO US ALL BECAUSE IT AFFECTS HOW WE TREAT PEOPLE AND HOW PEOPLE VIEW AND TREAT US. IT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE IN SOME CASES WHETHER YOU LITERALLY LIVE OR DIE, WHETHER YOU GET THAT JOB THAT YOU DESERVE OR WHETHER YOU ARE JUST SIMPLY TREATED WITH RESPECT. THE DAMAGE THAT STEREOTYPES, PREJUDICE AND DISCRIMINATION CAUSES WILL NEVER HEAL UNTIL WE ACKNOWLEDGE THAT IT EXISTS AND THAT IT IS WRONG.

MOST PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY CONSIDER THEMSELVES TO BE FAIR AND NON-PREJUDICE PEOPLE, BUT CHECK OUT THIS EXPERIMENT ON NETFLIX’S SHOW, 100 HUMANS. LIFE’S QUESTIONS. ANSWERED. (Episode 4, Experiment 4).
THE RESULTS ARE INTERESTING AND THE PARTICIPANTS DEMONSTRATE THE SAME TYPE OF BIASED BEHAVIOR THAT THE CIVILIANS IN DENVER EXHIBITED WHEN TESTED.
