Your Task
From learning guide pp. 12-13
8
Your Task in steps
Refer to your learning guide p. 12 +
marking criteria pp. 14-17
1
• Identify & summarise the professional practice issues in the case study from either a
nursing OR midwifery practice perspective.
2
• Identify and evaluate [analyse from your perspective] relevant professional e
ors
[from the case study] that potentially contributed to the incident happening.
3
• Link and support these using the professional practice literature and policy documents
[nursing policies/ professional guideline documents] [Again, analyse and interpret
them-don’t just copy/paraphrase them –tell us what they actually mean in practice]
4
• Discuss how your future practice might change and develop as a result of this incident.

See learning guide pp. 14-17Use the Marking Criteria
as a useful checklist for
your assignment work
What is a critical analysis essay?
Quiz – Which are co
ect answers?
a) It’s just a regular essay and just a chance for me to
describe something to my lecturer.
) It’s just where I criticise and point out all the wrong
things that have been going on in nursing practice.
c) It’s where I create an argument where I highlight my
thoughts/ideas showing the negative and the positives
[if applicable].
d) It’s where I craft a well structured argument which
thoroughly discusses and analyses my ideas looking at
[perhaps] both sides of the argument.
e) It’s where I just put in lots of references all together in
my paragraphs.

A Critical Analysis Essay:
1. Is very well structured
2. Presents a clear logical argument
3. Presents and critiques
[interprets] the argument
4. Uses critical analysis language
features
5. Is well considered and thought
out.
6. Has references to support the
main ideas.
13
For the future practice discussion section
• = Discuss how your practice
might change and develop as a
esult of this incident.
• Use recent and relevant
eferences to support your
answe
• First person writing here OK, eg.
I/me
• You can use the reflective
frameworks you have studied
to assist you in this [NO need
to reference the framework
though / just use as a planning
and critical thinking tool].
Eg. reflective framework
14
Getting started
• The next recommended
step is to plan your
thoughts/ plan your
answer first
Getting started
• Recommend TAKING A SERIES OF NOTES
• DO read the full case study a number of times and make notes on the issues you
observe. [The headings are helpful!!]
• Keep notes on who is doing what.
• Ask yourself ‘What should NOT have happened?’.
• Ask yourself ‘What would you have done, if this were you?’
• How will this inform your future nursing practice?
• What do the standards and policy documents say [NSQHS, NMBA, NSW Health
Policy as examples] about some of these behaviours you are seeing in the case
study?
Asking yourself these questions gives you good information to help form the
main themes in your essay.

What does critical analysis look like?
Q: Which paragraph ( A or B) shows critical analysis? How does it do it?
The incident in the case study involved a
man making a complaint against a nurse.
The patient said the nurse did not practice
safe hand hygiene when treating him. Hand
hygiene is an essential practice to ward off
infection and transfer of harmful microbes
(NMBA, XXXXXXXXXXThe patient also said the
nurse used unprofessional language with
him and also with other nurses and hospital
staff. The patient in the case study claimed
that the nurse also used unprofessional
language and behaviour in front of him, and
with other hospital staff. It is vital that
nurses use professional language with
patients and other staff whilst on duty
(Jenkins & Khalid, XXXXXXXXXXThe case study also
outlined how the patient felt unhappy with
some of the behaviour of the nurse whilst
treating him. In summary, nurses must act
professionally whilst on duty. 17
The incident described in the case study outlined some serious
issues in patient safety and the ability for the nurse to offer safe
and trusting care due to their behaviour on duty. It was
distu
ing to note that the nurse paid little attention to hand
hygiene whilst treating the patient. The lack of such hygiene is
well documented and often results in transfe
ing infection and
spreading diseases (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia
[NMBA], XXXXXXXXXXFurthermore, the case study outlines that the
nurse was observed using unprofessional language not only to
the patient, but also to colleagues on occasion, and this is
particularly concerning. It is important that nurses are always
professional when on duty and this is reflected in use of
language, and ve
al and non-ve
al communication use (Jenkins
& Khalid, XXXXXXXXXXAdditionally, it is vital that nurses whilst on duty
display co
ect levels of professional behaviour, which in turn
protects their patients and others in their care. In summary, it is
distu
ing to read the actions of this nurse in this case study, as
these serious issues could have easily been avoided and the
importance of nurses displaying professional behaviour whilst on
duty is evident.
