    This is a written assessment that assesses your knowledge of the unit.
This assessment is in one part:
1. Research and Knowledge Questions
And is supported by:

    Submission instructions
    On completion of this assessment, you are required to submit it to your Teache
Assessor for marking. If you are completing this as an online quiz, ensure you click the submit button when complete. You can save as you progress to avoid losing your work.

1. Define the principles of cultural awareness.
There may be various similarities and differences between two different cultures. We should be sensitive towards these diversities.
It is important to recognise and respect an individual that belongs to a certain culture and to always meet their rights.
Respect towards a culture is recognition and protection of their inherent rights and cultures.
Being aware of the cultural differences and appreciating them as well as understanding one’s own culture and beliefs is cultural competence.
We must personally try to expand our knowledge on the different cultures that exist around us.
2. Define the principles of cultural competence.
We must have an open attitude by acquiring curiosity to learn more about others and not only about ourselves.
Self-awareness about one’s own culture and values, ability to recognise one’s personal biases is important
Being aware about cultural skills and being able to adapting to one’s cultural background and also to other cultural styles is beneficial.
3. Explain how the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 (C’wth) supports cultural safety?
Discrimination against any individual on the basis of their skin colour is known as Racial Discrimination. Different culture means there can be diversity in human skin colour and it should not lead to discrimination. The Racial Discrimination Act 1975 supports cultural safety by making it unlawful to discriminate a person because of his/her race, colour, ethnicity, descent or national origin.
4. Describe your understanding of the diversity of Aboriginal and/or To
es Strait Islander cultures.
People from two distinct cultural groups comprising of Aboriginal the To
es Strait Islander cultures form Australia’s Indigenous people. They refer to themselves as Koori, Nunga or Mu
i or may describe them as ‘saltwater people’. In the Indigenous culture, language, family, law and ceremony are five key interconnected elements. The Aboriginal and To
es Strait Islander families work, participate and contribute well and successfully to the community. The elders of the community are valued for advice on social, political and other issues.

a nullius or ‘nobody’s land’. In 1788 the first British fleet entered the coastline Wa
ange which is now Sydney and claimed the land of Aboriginal people. There is a history of resistance among the Aboriginals. From the beginning they actively resisted the invasion of the British which led to
utal massacres which came to be known as ‘Frontier Wars’. This went on till as recent as 1960. Until 1967 Aboriginals were not included I the government censes and only from then did they even get awarded their wages.
