Summary
Ethnic groups share similar culture, religion, language, as well as a viewpoint that they have a universal origin. They have a collective understanding of ancestral ties and recognise that their heritage affects their fate, political, and the social economic organization of their community. Ethnic grouping is exclusive and not inclusive such that outsiders are not accepted. Ethnocentrism is the perception that one’s own community is the centre of the attention while viewing outsiders with disregard. Ethnocentrism is believed as the origin of ethnic differences, political insecurity, and war. This is what has resulted in killings and genocide in countries like Rwanda, Bosnia, Congo, and Kosovo among others (Cottam et al 2012).
Multiethnic or Multisectarian States
Multiethnic or Multisectarian states are present when there are two ethnic groups, which cannot come together neither
eak away and form independence. People who are within multiethnic countries are loyal to their own sectarian or ethnic group, and not to the entire community. These countries do not have the necessary resources to form a state but fight to maintain self-government or take a huge share of political power they share with their ethnic society. Today, multiethnic states found are because of colonialism through structures formed while being governed by other powers. The prevailing groups were able to take authority by serving colonial powers therefore; they are concerned with protecting their own instead of the whole community. These groups use consociationalism and federalism to rule deeply divided societies (Cottam et al 2012).
Reasons for Conflict
Competition between ethnic groups may result in cultural conflicts. However, an ethnic conflict is psychologically rooted, triggering conflict when an opportunity of interest to one group seems viable for the other. Mobilization by political powers fuel things for the groups to compete in case of a threat or an opportunity. Social competition among groups increase conflicts, as one group feels threatened by another depending on social status. Political leaders influence stereotypes and emotions in the society by planting feelings of hatred towards another group. Evolutionary psychology also contributes to conflict because human beings are naturally designed to adapt and solve problems together.
