Introduction
Waste Management is the term used to refer to waste product collection, sorting, recycling, transport and control. Waste products are the different materials that are created by human activity and are used to minimise their effects on health, the environment or on aesthetics. Recovering the different resources from it is another application of waste management (Heacock et al., 2015). The treatment of concrete, liquid and gaseous wastes is involved. A variety of methods and areas of expertise are required for each form of waste.
Part One: Solid Waste Management Issues in Tasmania
Waste management strategies vary from those of developed and developing nations. In reality, the methods used in u
an and rural areas and even for industrial or residential producers, are different. Management of non-hazardous residential and institutional waste in metro areas is the responsibility of local government authorities. However, the generator is responsible for the disposal of non-hazardous commercial and industrial waste (Hoornweg, Bhada‐Tata & Kennedy, 2015).
In modern context, the management of waste is one of the leading environmental issues for both, developing and developed regions of the world. With the rapid growth of industrialisation and u
an population accordingly, the solid waste management is becoming major challenge to deal with. In the context of growing regions of Australia such as Tasmania, industrial expansion, structuring of u
anised colonies in these expanding regions as well as the pressure of the u
an population to have their daily needs well met out, are some of the driving forces.
These have led the State Governments to plan their strategies out in order to provide solid waste management (Ritchie, 2019). Tasmania has been previously known for becoming one of the influential suppliers of packaged products to all other states. It is implied by this fact that the pressure driving forces of packaged products have created problems to recycling and managing the solid waste in the local regions.
In the context of the above, the Tasmanian state government, like all other Australian State governments, perceives the concept of solid waste management as primary factor to provide sustainability of environment to reduce the health problems associated with it. It is noteworthy here that ecologically sound, cost-effective and socially acceptable management of solid waste products is necessary for sustainable growth. Waste is the consensus that must be minimised or avoided and that under well-balanced economic and ecological circumstances, non-levitated waste must be reused or recycled as far as possible (Commonwealth of Australia, 2018).
Recycling contributes to a safe, united society, but it has not been fully accepted as a way to minimise waste and generate growth. Society considers waste as material that is thought to have little or no worth. The waste produced is in large amounts, facing the problem of disposal in such a way that it has become an issue of nuisance. As an outcome of dumping waste along the roadside, dumping sites and illegal landfill sites, insufficient solid waste disposal has contributed to environmental degradation and growth prevention in a world that forgets that waste can be recycled (Heacock et al., 2015).
An example of the driving force behind solid waste management can be given as in almost every region, people are not very much keen to know the process of recycling their waste properly; they cram all kinds of waste into one bin. Any of this waste is recyclable when separately disposed of. This in-separation of waste could result from people's lack of knowledge of the need to recycle, the need to recognise and isolate the recyclable waste and the proper bin to dispose of it. After separation and collection, the amount of waste produced from various sources could be a good source of business (Commonwealth of Australia, 2018).
In the form of sustainable growth and revenue generation, the prospect of pursuing the recycling of solid waste items has not been completely taken into account. In certain countries—and Australia is one such nations—where solid waste disposal is mostly for dumpsites and landfills, it has an environmental effect rather than recycling. The environmental effect of disposal sites and landfills is the production of methane gas that leads to global warming, the loss of land available for growth and the pollution of soil and groundwater.
Altogether, these factors dominate health status of people because consistent living in contaminated environment causes several unwanted health issues such as
eathing issues, visual impairment as well as weak metabolism (Wang, Huo & Duan, 2020). Inclusion of CSR practices can also be analysed here in the modern context of industrial expansion. Tasmania is seen as one of the largest packaged bottling plan holders in Australian regions and the collaboration to solid waste management dates back to the onset of the industry in the 1960s when a refillable bottle scheme was run by some organisations on a voluntary basis in Tasmania in the 1960s and 70s.
