  • Please make sure you read question one properly in Assessment 1. This questionasks whatSDoH determined the need for the project.

An example would be education as a SDoH- that there was a lack of education as the students were not attending school.

Healthy child development - the children did not have healthy child development as they had recurrent ear and eye infections and scabies - this made them realise they need the project.

You can decide what SDoH you want to use as long as you can justify your response

1. Two social determinants of health that helped to determine the need for the project
Social determinants of the health are the factors, which influence the health of the community or individual. Social determinants are the condition, in which an individual born, live and grow old. These conditions are influenced by allocation of the resources, power and money at local, national and global level. There are many social determinants, which influence the social outcomes of the society. As per the case study, social determinant of health, which influence the indigenous people of Gnibi society resulting in child abuse, are healthy child development and educational attainment (Rural Health Channel, 2014).
Healthy Child Development
Children are to grow up to be healthy individuals is an obvious fact for an aware society. Parents expect their child to grow up beautifully amongst all the secured and healthy odds that prevail in their environment. However, as argued by Taylor et al. (2016), this is completely dependent on the type of environment the children are subjected and the kind of nourishment they receive in their early years. This indicates that if the child is devoid of a healthy environment in its childhood and did not get healthy food to eat or clear drinkable water to consume then, they might have to face with various diseases, which leads to their unhealthy development.
For example, when a child is born, their parents ensure that they get their children immune against all the pathogenic diseases such as polio, measles, chicken pox and pneumonia. In the cases, when the parents are not able to ensure performing this particular duty of theirs, the children are acquired with these diseases (Marmot, 2018). As is seen in the case presented in the video, the children are deprived of the basic amenities of living a proper life, which makes them prone to developing diseases, along with lack of education and emotional growth.
As supported by Strandell and Hall (2015), when the child does not develop in a healthy manner, it tends to become not only physically ill, but also mentally ill. The role of the neighbour or the society in which the child lives is also largely responsible for this, which can also lead to child abuse. As shown in the video, the children are too vulnerable and do not receive proper healthy environment to grow, thus, facing child abuse quite easily. Domestic violence, lack of education and unhealthy living conditions disrupt their wellbeing.
Educational Attainment
Education plays important role in development of the society. As suggested by Marmot (2018), education is one of the important social determinants of the health. Lack of education, reduces the skills development in the individuals. There is lack of awareness among the people about the social issues, societies and healthcare programmes organised by the government to the people. As per the case study, one of the adults was complaining that now money is needed to seek education.
Poverty pushes the children to leave their education in between and start working as a child labour to support their family. Lack of education led people to pursue jobs, which required lower skills liking working as labour in the mines or working as labour in factories. Low skilled job means low salary wages. Low salary wages are responsible for the...
