Introduction
The context of medical social work practices have been expanded over the past few years in the light of expansion of diverse populations and ethnic groups demanding for various requirements. In fact, in spite of developing one of the strongest and integrated healthcare networks in the world, the scope of practices medical social work in United States is still challenging. The impacts and burdens have increased over the healthcare resources, given that the diverse populations have emerged into the mainstream society. The lack of resources and their accessibility is one of the major standpoints, as discussed in the case study of Wohali. Wohali is a Cherokee Native Indian going through mental pressure, which is further affecting his physical condition. The following paper examines rational of medical social work and the possible interventions that might help him on ethical and theoretical grounds to decide what is best for him.
Psychological Factors Implicated in Health Outcomes
At first, it is important to examine some of the psychological determinants that have affected the health condition of Wohali. There are two major links, which can have possibly affected his mental condition to develop addiction to heroin along with a pre-diagnosis of hypertension and diabetes (Mitchell, 2015). The first determinant is related to his state of employment.
As per the general understanding of his case, Wohali has taken some decisions in life that cannot be called ‘wise’. He could leave his early job only because he did not find it ‘exciting enough’ to work though, he knew it well that it might endanger his financial stability.
The term “more” has been used twice in the case study, which emphasizes the degree of wrong direction that Wohali could take in life. By moving to TN after leaving his casino job, he simply became clueless about how to be financially independent.
Secondly, there is social factor affecting his state of mind; he moved to TN with his girlfriend with whom, he has now maintained the good friendship status only. For his family, as mentioned in the case study as well, he has an ex-wife and two children with whom, in spite of making efforts, he is no longer able to contact.
His other family members, as he fears due to consistent failures in life, find him a “disappointment”. Altogether, his financial state as well as his relationship status has affected his psychology. It is likely possible that Wohali has developed stress over the course of past years and that has now resulted in not only addiction to heroin but also in a distu
ed state of physical health.
Having distu
ed state of employment as well as social life both affect the mentality of the individuals as they find addiction to substance as their only way out from their troubles (McCoyd & Kerson, 2016). Wohali requires medical attention based on his addiction as well as lack of social inclusion. He is having problems with social inclusion since the very childhood period.
As per his behavioral approach—or rather it is due to the behavior of the clinical experts involved in his treatment as a child—Wohali has developed strong prejudices towards the overall healthcare system. He...
