Introduction
Influenza is also known as flu. It is highly contagious disease caused due by influenza virus. This disease attacks the respiratory system including nose, throat and lungs of the individual. There are many strains of the influenza virus and these strains are modified to develop new strains, which attack healthy people and make them sick (Grohskopf, 2016). There are many ways influenza virus communicates from one individual from others by droplet infection or sharing the articles of infected person. The following assignment focusses on the vaccination process of influenza, which is of highest concern presently for this disease.
Background Information on Influenza
Although, influenza can have impact on any individual but children and older adults are highly vulnerable towards the disease. As suggested by Lafond et al. (2016), influenza virus can attack any individual but some people are highly vulnerable to the disease. These people are young children between the age of 1 month and 5 years, older adults at the age of 65 and above, community nurses and residents of nursing home or other long-term facilities, pregnant women, people who suffered from chronic illness like asthma or diabetes.
As mentioned by Suarez (2016), signs and symptoms shown by individual suffering from influenza include fever over 100.4o F (38o C), headache, chills and sweats, aching muscles, dry and persistent cough, weakness, fatigue, sore throat and nasal congestion. Since influenza constantly changing, thus, constant annual influenza vaccine needs to be administered to children and older.
Types of Flu Vaccines and Requirement for Annual Boosters
The flu vaccines are developed to protect the people against common strains of the influenza. There are two types of influenza vaccines available. One is trivalent and other is quadrivalent. The trivalent is three strains vaccine, which consist of two strain of influenza A and on strain of Influenza B. On contrary, quadrivalent consists of four strains, which mean two strain of influenza A and two strain of influenza B. The trivalent influenza vaccines are available in the market under commercial name Fluad.
These adjuvanted vaccines are designed to provide higher immunity to the people at the age of 65 and above. A high-dose influenza vaccine known as fluzone is also available for the older people (Demicheli, Jefferson, Fe
oni, Rivetti & Di Pietrantonj, 2018). On contrary, quadrivalent influenza vaccines are present under the commercial name include FluQuadri Junior, Fluarix Tetra, FluQuadri and AfluriaQuad. These vaccines are given to the people below the age of 65. Each vaccine is designed for the specific group of people.
Following is the age group along with their designed vaccine:
· FluQuadri Junior – for those 6 months to less than 3 years of age
· Fluarix Tetra - for all those from 6 months of age
· FluQuadri - for those from 3 years of age
· Afluria Quad - for those 5 years of age and ove
Children between the age of six and nine months, who are receiving the vaccine for the first time must be administered with double dose within month. Apart from this, a quadrivalent cell-based influenza vaccine are given to the children above the age of four, these vaccines ate completely egg free (Impagliazzo, Meijberg, Radosevic, Wagner & Ding, 2018). This vaccine is present in the market under the name of Flucelvax Quadrivalent. On contrary, recombinant quadrivalent influenza shot can be given to the people above the age of eighteen years and older. This vaccine is present in the market in the name of Flublok Quadrivalent.
Apart from this, annual booster for the influenza is administered to people annually because the protection provides by the vaccine becomes weak over the period and leave the individual vulnerable to the diseases.
