The Issue
The incident that I am about to recount here is associated with workplace discrimination and harassment of a co-employee belonging to the north-eastern regions of India. From the recruitment, I observed that my colleague who hails from Assam, has been continually stereotyped for her different appearance, language, values, traditions and cultural practices. Often, she has been laughed at and taunted for her facial appearance, leading her towards mental
eakdown. During her trainee days too, she was given impossible tasks to complete while also withholding information deliberately. There were also instances of repeated denial of promotion. She was also receiving inequal payment in comparison to other employees, therefore experiencing exclusion in the workplace.
Significance of the Issue in the Context of Cultural Diversity
Issues of workplace discrimination and harassment based on cultural diversity have become a regular incident across the globe. The incident, that will follow this discussion, is especially important in the context of cultural diversity because Indian culture is known for its diversity and inclusivity. Such incidents of cultural prejudice and discrimination contradicts the ideals and value system of the nation. It is also important to
ing to light the incident of cultural prejudice in order to make the people aware of the cu
ent cultural scenario of India. According to Triana, Jayasinghe, Pieper, Delgado and Li (2019), the principles of social psychology, which is inclusive of affect, behavior and cognition can be applicable to the studies of stereotyping, prejudice and discrimination. This incident will, in a way, help the people realise their accountability towards the idea of cultural diversity. By going through an example of the issue of cultural discrimination, people will be more aware about their own behaviour and check their attitude towards racial and cultural differences. The issue that is discussed here, will therefore, act as a lesson or a case study for the people who have not been educated regarding these subjects.
Behavioral and Affective Aspects of the Incident
Behavioral aspect is akin to discrimination, that is, unjustified negative behavior towards a certain group of people for their racial and cultural orientation. Affective aspect points at prejudice and ingroup favoritism. In this incident, the co-employees of the Assamese girl were expressing their discriminatory attitude towards her due to her different cultural orientation. Their behavior can be considered to be racist as well as sexist. Their reaction to her different physical appearance led them stereotype and bully her as an inefficient employee, thereby isolating her from the rest of the office. The employee experienced repeated mental
eakdowns due to the toxic environment of the workplace. She was having communication gap due to her cultural differences, as a result of which the co-employees taunted and ridiculed her in their own regional languages. Mukherjee and Dutta (2018) also provide examples of incidents of racial and cultural discrimination of north-eastern women in Delhi, which took a number of prejudiced forms such as name calling, denial of services, physical abuses through instances of unwanted touching...
