Leadership and Management:
Differences:
Both leadership and management are important competencies needed to add institutional value. Both of them are needed for success in any field and are not superior or inferior to each other. Leadership is an individual trait and quality to influence people or a team to achieve the goals and targets willingly and with enthusiasm. Leadership is an important part of management though. Whereas, management is a
oader perspective and a process involving various steps to manage things in the best possible way and achieve the desired results, by utilising the skills of the entire team. Management is for formal and organized group of people only, whereas leadership is for both formal and informal groups. Leadership focuses on encouraging change and inspiring people whereas, management focuses on
inging stability and managing the activities, within the organization. Leadership depends on long term vision while management can be for a short term project or an activity with measurable timelines. For proper management in the workplace, it is ideal to have leaders who can show their leadership skills in making the teams work in unison for organizational goals and better work culture to reduce attrition of the employees.
Leadership Styles:
The four leadership styles can be described as follows:

The leader doesn’t believe in consulting with his team and subordinates and dictates his decision on them. He centralises the power within him and expects prompt implementation of his decisions.
) Democratic Style- This is also called as participative leadership style. Here all the members in the team along with the leader takes a participative approach in the decision making process. Here there is no hierarchy followed and free flow of ideas from within the group is encouraged for getting to the best possible decision for implementation. Democratic leaders emphasize collaboration and the free-flow of ideas.
c) Free rein leadership- This is a style followed by a leader who actually formulates the goals and the policies and set the guidelines to be followed but gives full liberty to his team members to act accordingly and freely so as to accomplish the desired results by following the set guidelines and policies. This style is also called as Laissez-Faire.
d) Paternalistic leadership- here the leader assumes that his role is fatherly in nature. The leader explains the reasons of the management decisions to his subordinates and also gives more importance to the social needs of his team. The leader consults his team and take their feedback before taking a decision. This leader actually has a sense of family in him while leading his team.
