Introduction
Although major depressive disorder is a pervasive disorder, the way a sufferer manifests influences not just the clinician's potential to establish a diagnosis, but also the sufferer's overall well-being. Healthcare professionals must recognise not just the way culture influences the manifestation of major depressive disorder but also the ways cultural beliefs influence the patient's recognition of this diagnosis. Religion and culture may have an impact on the ways depression is presented, with physical symptoms having been the most prevalent presenting complaint (Al-Sawafi et al., 2020). Major depressive disorder is regarded as emasculating in many cultures. Patients may be hesitant to seek medical intervention, prefe
ing to seek assistance from other sources, including a witch physician or religious figure. As a consequence, stigma impedes depression treatment, which is aggravated by a dearth of public awareness as well as comprehension of psychological problems. Steps to eradicate the stigma linked with depression have been made previously. Throughout Arab cultures, the significance of depression and stigma is recognised, since a patient's reluctance to reveal depression is often linked to a fear of disgrace or humiliating their family (Arjadi et al., 2018).
This paper focuses on the culturally safe nursing intervention for major depressive disorder and an evidence-based psychoeducation strategy for its treatment.
Nursing Intervention
The most significant and culturally safe nursing intervention for sufferers of major depressive disorder is cognitive-behavioral therapy. Arab culture is incredibly diverse. To ensure that the evaluation is precise and the intervention is efficient, cognitive behavioural therapy for Arab clients necessitates a lot of distinct considerations (Yang et al., 2020). This encompasses therapists' perceptions toward and recognition of individuals of Arab legacy; acknowledgment of the drawbacks and benefits of cognitive behavioural therapy with an Arab patient, awareness of the ways to develop a trusting and respectful connection with Arab individuals, including an understanding of Arab expectations and customs, connectedness with prevalently presented concerns; and recognition of the inappropriateness and appropriateness of measures and tests (Kim & Park, 2018).
CBT considers five different aspects of an issue: emotions, cognitions, physiological responses (such as physical symptoms and sensations), behaviour, and the su
oundings. CBT assumes that someone's cognitions (beliefs, perceptions, self-talk, and images) mediate a person's emotions, conduct, and bodily responses to the environment. Functional cognition is considered to lead to healthy adjustment, whilst dysfunctional cognition is thought to lead to dysfunction. The cognitive behaviour therapist's purpose is to support clients in understanding the connections between such five dimensions. Clients learn to understand how unpleasant, inappropriate, or delusional beliefs can cause suffering in the form of unpleasant maladaptive behaviour, physical sensations, and unmanageable or out-of-context feelings (Lindegaard et al., 2021).
Customers also realise that their physical and social su
oundings might influence their suffering. The psychotherapist then assists the patient in recognising steps they may undertake to either modify the situation or manage it more efficiently with it after the consumer knows these interconnections. Modifying one's behaviour or su
oundings, as well as internal cognitive adjustments, are potential solutions. Furthermore, internal cognitive modifications, refe
ed to as cognitive restructuring, entail more than just remaining positive. Consumers instead learn to notice frequent cognitive distortions, automatic dysfunctional thinking, and cognitive inclinations associated with the paradigm (a kind of cognitive framework) by which humans take in and a
ange their experiences (Noferesti & Tavakol, 2022).
Consumers learn to perceive themselves, society, and the prospective more thoroughly and genuinely by contemplating a greater range of potential versions of events and ideas that they may have never considered previously. A cultural competence practise in CBT commences long before someone begins working with consumers in therapy. It starts with clinicians paying attention to this aspect where they might have stereotypes. According to...
