Q1. Ms A’s Care Needs
Introduction
A social worker’s responsibility in a healthcare is to
ing the betterment in the societal and physical status of a patient. They need to consult the physicians, patient and patient’s family to discuss and take action regarding any social issues the patient go through at an instance. As the provided case is also dealing with a mentally unstable patient, care needs in such case is very crucial and necessary. It involves the appropriate diagnosis, treatment, and providing comfort to a person with mentally unstable state. In a healthcare, a mentally ill person needs a very sensitive and delicate procedure to be treated (Golightley and Goemans, 2017).
Significance of Mental Healthcare for People with Mental Health Issues
Mental healthcare is provided as primary healthcare, which consists of the essential healthcare of the patient. An unstable mental state can arise from chronic diseases like schizophrenia spectrum disorder, severe bipolar disorders and severe major depressions. It causes the patients to lose their abilities to think, talk, decide and take actions. Because of their disabilities, they cannot survive by their own and thus become dependent upon some special care. A person can be mentally challenged by birth or by accumulating distu
ing circumstances and gradually falls mentally ill.
In such cases, the patients go through uncomfortable experiences and emotional imbalances (Alvey, 2019). Thus, they may require moral and emotional assistance during such phases and should always be under a proper supervision. Social workers at healthcare services treat the patients with depression, anxiety issues and severe mental instability by therapies, diagnose, and assist them with special care. Persons with emotionally imbalance state of mind may show both behavioural and physical discomforts. In such cases, it becomes quite challenging for the social workers to take care of them. However, an efficient result in such case can come through taking proper and necessary actions.
An Overview of the Case Study
In the case of Ms A, it has been stated that her age is 35 and she has gone through several mental and societal challenges throughout her past. Her medical reports say that she suffers from visual impairment, renal failure, diabetes, emotionally unstable personality disorder. She is cu
ently in a mental health residential placement. She was allocated to a social worker for Need assessment to assess her needs according to Care Act 2015. However, the social worker found Ms A. to become improved and mentally stable enough to take decision for herself and thus lead an independent life.
However, when she encountered some delay and complicated procedural issues in her housing application, she went through emotional and mental imbalance again. This again reflected her behavioural and social patterns and the whole scenario was complicated. As a result, several issues again came up such as she became homeless, disharmony within family, frequent medications and visits to hospitals for her health issues, which is insulin; victimised by unprofessional behaviours from multidisciplinary teams involved, police a
ests, sexual and emotional exploitation by strange men through web dating. All the mentioned issues made it more challenging for her to cop-up with the circumstances and declined her mental health.
Care Needs and Goals Specific to Ms A on the basis of Health models
In the above case, Ms A has been going through both physical and mental illness. Thus, care needs in her case are very essential. As she is also at a vulnerable age of 35, other social issues such as exploitation by people and conflicts due to economic problems may also arise in her case. Therefore, as far as care needs is considered in case of Ms A, it can be both healthcare need and social care needs.
Healthcare needs is defined by National Health Service to be the requirements of people for prevention, treatment and post-medication treatments for treating their illness, diseases, disabilities and injuries, in order to attain betterment in their physical condition (Wallace et al. 2015). On the other hand, as argued by Caldicott (2019), social care need is to focus on providing people with emotional support, safety from social distu
ance, vulnerable situations, family disputes, domestic violence, and helping them to be socially independent and interact with others to share their emotions and thoughts. Social care needs targets to
ing the people to be a part of the society.
For any kind of healing, treatment goal is very much required. To set the treatment goals, a deep understanding on health models is vital. These models are conceptual frameworks which define the set of approaches towards intervention and treatment of a health issue.
A holistic model of life considers life as the whole to be taken care of, regardless of focusing on a specific disease, or any physical issue; this approaches on betterment of body, mind and spirit. This is one of the ancient models. But in this case, it can’t be applied as it gives a conventional approach of healthcare demonstration. The empowerment model takes into account self-actualization of an individual by inspiring them to have the ability of critical thinking. It comprises the social, economic, educational, political and psychological aspects to derive a solution. The case suggests that application of biomedical model alone cannot be sufficient in this case. Biomedical model purely focuses on the biological and physical issues. Although this model considers intervention, diagnosis and treatment of a disease of the patient but doesn’t consider any social factors that may be associated with it.
However, people with mental instability due to hypertension or depression; have been observed to respond more efficiently to functional treatments. That is why the treatment goals should be more functional than empirical. A social model or psychosocial model of health is more applicable in such case which builds the framework for the treatment goals. A psychosocial model comprises a
oader aspect of psychological, social, physical, environment and economic factors. It doesn’t only focuses on the treatment of a person or defines the problems associated with it but assists in developing solution strategies through education, politics, and health promotion. It is moreover a community based approach for treatment (Erdman, 2014).
Development of Care planning Framework for Ms. A
It is also very important to understand the causes of an untreated depression. Sometimes it can be a legal or a social issue. For example, a patient can not have adequate finances or insurance for a better treatment. Researches have also suggested that when care given to people with such disabilities is relevant to their situation and problems, they co-operate with the service providers as well (Wilson et al. 2017). This in turn gives a positive result in many cases. Mental health related issues are complicated and the patients’ behavioural attitude can change with time, circumstances, physical and emotional factors. Thus, setting goal for the patients and professionals are equally important. The frameworks set principles and guidelines for the developing good practice in management in health and social care services. The suitable framework based on the above discussion on health models related to the concerned case should be chosen considering betterment of Ms. A’s physical, mental and social issues. The framework SOAP which stands for Subject Object Assessment Plan is used for documentation of patients’ information in a...
