Introduction
Among the seventeen goals towards sustainable development introduced by United States in 2015, the second goal deals with the criterion of ending hunger in the world. Moving towards zero hunger will help to achieve the sustainable development goals through a healthy population and progress the earth towards its clean development. The aim is to remove malnutrition by providing food to all and increasing the agricultural supply by 2030.
Though the plan was meant to be achieved by 2030, yet a major portion of the world yet remains in hunger and it is quite difficult to achieve the goal by the time promised. The main problem the world is facing is not lack of food but lack of nutrition, which is acting as a hindrance towards the sustainable development of the world. We will discuss this issue regarding a particular country and the health determinants affecting the people within the country.
Overview
The place, which we will focus on regarding the Global perspective, is Africa. Though the problem of malnutrition has gradually decreased in several parts of Africa, yet a major part of Africa faces the ba
ier of food scarcity. Severe food insecurity in addressed and more than 90 million of children under the age of five is massively underweight (UNDP Africa, 2022).
The number of undernourished people in Africa reached 821 million by 2017. Asia alone faced 63% of world hunger due to the loss of biodiversity and environmental degradation. Nearly 150 million children suffer from a stunted growth due to undernourishment. In 2020, the innovative and technical measures are adopted to produce a greater yield of agricultural produce.
Genetically diverse seeds and seed banks are set up to maintain a continuous supply of food. As supported by Otekunrin et al. (2020), the zero-hunger goal for sustainable development highly lags in case of Africa due to the occu
ence of the COVID pandemic.
The crisis created a huge impact on the lives of the people being a social determinant affecting their income and employment. The other relevant social determinants of health, which are acting as a ba
ier in achieving the goal, are lack of clean water supply, lack of access to public healthcare services, lack of personal hygiene and sanitation and lack of good health due to malnutrition. Such social determinants must be improved by the economic stability, quality education, access to quality healthcare and community development.
However, according to Otekunrin et al. (2019), looking closely at Africa, especially considering Nigeria, they are far from achieving the goal by 2030 if proper measures are not taken accordingly. The outdated policies and technological innovations act as the main limitation towards attaining the goal of ending hunger by 2030. It can be improved by industrial growth and better living standards.
Epidemiology
Africa mainly suffers from health concerns regarding hunger due to the drought condition, conflicts within the country and instability, which leads to shortage of food. The poverty conditions of the maximum population devoid them from getting a proper education and employment. The epidemiological data provided by WHO shows the most critical condition of Africa regarding hunger during the pandemic situation.
Africa needs to take immediate action to achieve the sustainability by 2030 (World Health Organisation, 2021). According to the...
