Case Study
Kim, a Registered Nurse, graduated from the University of Technology Sydney in 2018. She is now undertaking a Transition to Practice (TTP) program at a tertiary hospital in western Sydney. Halfway through her program, she was involved in a cardiac a
est on the ward.
Fortunately, the patient was successfully resuscitated and transfe
ed to the Intensive Care Unit. The resuscitation went smoothly apart from an incident where the attending Registrar shouted at Kim, admonishing her for not knowing which equipment to provide for the intubation. Up until that point, Kim had felt that she was “getting on top of things” and coping quite well with the demands of ward work. Kim left the a
est feeling “hopeless” and “useless” and incompetent as a nurse. These thoughts and feelings are causing her ongoing distress and emba
assment, damaging her confidence and affecting her ability to conduct everyday nursing tasks. For the first time in her career, she is considering leaving.
The following day, Kim’s Nursing Unit Manager (NUM) approaches her on the floor during the busy morning shift (su
ounded by colleagues and patients). She says “I hear you were really upset and might need some counselling after what happened during the a
est the other day. I am free now, come into my office”. Kim follows the NUM into her office, feeling emba
assed that the issue was raised in front of her colleagues and other patients. Kim also feels uneasy about burdening her colleagues with her workload while she is in the office. Kim sits down and begins to listen to the NUM….

Trigger questions you could ask yourself to put this paper together….

Issues and factors that impact on nursing leaders and professional practice
How would you approach the situation if you were the Nurse Unit Manager (NUM)? How would the RN Standards of Practice apply in the NUM’s case?

Clinical leadership expectations for beginning new graduate nurses: scope of practice, legal and ethical boundaries
Did Kim meet her obligations as a new graduate nurse? How would the RN Standards of Practice apply in Kim’s case?

Gi
s model of reflection: strategies to develop personal and professional resilience
How you would have felt in Kim’s situation. What strategies would you recommend to develop personal and professional resilience?

Supportive elements in effective leadership: knowledge, evidence, communication and networks
What knowledge, evidence, communication and networks could leaders, such as the NUM in the case study, offer new graduate nurses to support their development as a leader?

Introduction-
Leadership is one of the important elements, which is needed at every stage of the life. In case of the nursing practice, nurses have to develop their leadership skills to develop the excellence in their profession. In nursing practice, dealing of the emergency situation or handling the staff demand for the leadership skills, failure to show these skills can be considered as incapability of the nurses. As stated by Fischer (2016), leadership can be defined as the process, in which an individual leads a group of people either in an organisation or during critical situation.
Leadership skills can be developed in the individuals with practice. As mentioned by Porter-O'Grady and Malloch (2015), leadership skills in the individuals cannot be helpful if the individual is failed to learn the leadership style.
Development of leadership style depends upon either personality of the individual or on the situation. In nursing profession, nurses need to deal with different kinds of patients, they have to guide them, communicate with them or represent their team to patient or their families. This can be done by nurses successfully if they have good leadership style. As per the case study, it has been seen that Kim, a newly graduated nurse joined the transition to practice program in the tertiary hospital where during halfway of completion of her program, she was involved in the case of cardiac a
est. The resuscitation process was conducted, although procedure went smoothly yet Kim get scolded by registered nurse, as during the process she failed to identify the equipment needed for intubation. This incidence left Kim useless, hopeless, and incompetent. She wanted to leave the practice due to low confidence. She was in emba
assment and when Nursing unit manager called her, she left in guilt as she was called in front of colleagues to discuss the issue.
Issues and Factors Affecting Professional Practice and Nursing Leaders-
On the following day of the incident, her Nursing unit manager (NUM) called her. The approach taken by the nursing unit manager was wrong as it left Kim with emba
assment and guilt. Her condition is completely worsened. As stated by Tully and Boswell, (2017), the manager is the leader of the team. Manager has a duty towards taking care of each member of the team, and address their issues. Manager could have used the better mode of communication to approach the Kim. If I would be in place of nursing unit manager, I would have either emailed her or called her on her personal phone so that she can reply in isolation instead of in front of everyone.
Manager is not only the representative of the team but also caretaker of the team. Its responsibility is not limited to achieving the organisational goal or achieving team goal but to equally show sympathy towards their team member. As per the case study, it has been seen that when Kim failed to provide the assistance when patient undergo cardiac a
est, she is scolded by the seniors and this event have hard impact on Kim. As mentioned by Johnson and Smith (2018), when any of the team member have gone through rough situation or have conduct any mistake, which is influencing its work, then manager must provide comfort to the team member first by asking about the feeling and the incidence, instead, manager called the Kim and start talking. He failed to address the emotions of the Kim. If I would be in place of manager, then I would have made Kim sit in comfortable environment. then I addressed her feelings to judge the level of distress Kim is under and finally, I would have come to discuss about incident that happened. Since my personality test suggests I am a protagonist, which means my biggest strength is to take the initiative. I would have taken steps to talk about the emotions of Kim.
As noted by Saifman and Sherman (2019), it has been expected from the leader to understand the team member’s work and must not increase their problems. As per the case study, Kim was called by the manager on very busy morning shift, which burdened the work of all the colleagues of Kim, as they must do the work of Kim. This left her in guilte as her work is given to her colleagues and rest of the team member would be frustrated with the extra work.
I would have made the appointment with Kim so that her work and her team members would not suffer when Kim had meeting with me. Apart from this, manager instead of asking about what Kim is feeling and then discussing, manager make her sit down to listen to him. I would have started by asking about Kim’s feeling and then discuss the scenario, after that I would have given her the recommendation so that she can do better next time at her job. As noted by Huang and Feeney (2016), the manager as a leader plays important role in motivating their team members and help in building their confidence when they are going through their low phase.
As per the case study, the event of a
est leaves Kim hopeless and makes her feel useless and incompetent as a nurse. She was going through distress and emba
assment, her confidence and affected her nursing tasks. It was the duty of manager to address the feelings of Kim. I would address the emotional distress of Kim. As mentioned by Gilley et al. (2015), manager must use proper strategies and provide support to the patient to relieve their...
