Firstly, as an aromatherapist, a recent certification needs to be done before beginning to administer the oils to the children even if the family is apparently not having any health problem, on the same. It is important as there can be sometimes prevalence of allergies in some children to develop natural tolerance and the outburst occurs once they become a bit elder (Weber et al., 2017). Next, according to Tisserand Institute (2020), a GP should also be considered but as the family has no health problems, we might suggest once and proceed with the oil treatments.
For children, their skin is not coarse and it is actually much sensitive, hence oil should not be concentrated. The strong essence oils should be avoided as their respiratory system is not fully developed and strongly scented oils can cause them i
itation and problems with respiration. So for all these three children aged 1 year, 5 years and 10 years of age, Red Thyme (Thymus vulgaris ct. thymol) oil must be completely avoided. Care must be taken so that the child never ingests any oil while administering them. The oils should be effectively used to
ing out relief for the children and not any discomfort to them.
For the 1-year child, it is better not to use any oil but then if it is required then the dilution should be made such that there is just 1 drop of oil in the entire mixture. A test patch must be done first to check for any i
itation. The soothing oils such as lavender, lemon , orange, mandarin, tea tree ,sandalwood, rose, blue tansy, cedar wood, copaiba ,cypress, German Chamomile, geranium, helichrysum and neroli can be used. The consideration of oil for the rest of the children must be done with regard to the 1-year-old child.
For administering oils to the 5-year-old child, any soothing oil can be considered among the previously mentioned ones with priorities given considering the 1-year-old child. Like, as if any oil is found to be not suitable for the 1-year child after developing i
itation, it can be avoided for the entire family. The concentration of oil used in the dilution mixture needs to be 0.5 to 1% (3 to 6 drops) of oil in the entire dilution mixture. Inhalation of the oil can be considered instead of direct application for both the 1-year child and 5-year-old child as it is sometimes more effective and chances of allergies or any discomfort can be directly avoided.
Finally, for the 10-year-old child, strong or spicy oils such as Red Thyme, Cinnamon and Clove can be used apart from the previously mentioned soothing oils but necessary steps need to be followed for the same. The essential oil before administration must be heated in an oil burner; the amount of oil to be used in the burner is dependent on the age of the children and the size of the room. If the burner is used in a very small space, then less oil should...
