Describe significant figures, events and ideas in the history of psychology
The history of psychology is shaped by the significant figures who have contributed to this subject. Adler Alfred who is the Austrian psychiatrist and is close associate of the Freud believed in social motives that the sexual drives for motivation of people. His contribution is towards individual psychology. According to him, the people are driven by the superiority achievements. He opined that mental disorder is caused by the extreme feeling of inferiority. The next person is ASCH Soloman who has investigated social conformity. He studies how people react when their perception regarding events are challenged by other peoples. He found that group thinking compels an individual to agree event if majority is obviously wrong. Atkinson Richard and Richard Shiffrin have developed a three stage model of memory storage. Albert Bandura has significantly contributed to the psychology and his focus is towards observational learning. Aaron Beck has developed cognitive therapy that is used to deal with disorders such as depressions, panic attacks, eating disorder and addictions. He also developed Beck depression inventory questionnaire.
Cannon Walter has developed the cannon-Bard theory of emotion that proposed that emotional and physical stimuli take place simultaneously and there is no causal relationship between them. Charles Darwin proposed the evolutionary theory and has contributed to the evolution psychology. Leon festinger has developed the theory of cognitive dissonance and examined the people’s efforts to view their behaviours, attitudes and beliefs consistency. Sigmund Freud has a remarkable contribution to the psychology. His comprehensive theory of psychoanalysis explains the human mind structure, human attitude as well as behavior. His explanation regarding sexuality is found controversial but he created enormous influence on the western thought.
