Unit 8: Discussion Introduction For this discussion question, you will again be referring to the LearnScape for Health Care Delivery, Episode 1: The New System (Scenario); however, the focus of this unit’s discussion IS NOT on which system to acquire or how best to implement that system OR on the identification of concerns associated with the security and privacy of private health information once a chosen system is in service. The focus is on those contributing factors that can diminish the value proposition associated with the acquisition of IT and IS, and the need to formulate strategies to overcome these perceived barriers. Below is a brief recap of the scenario: “The Board of Director of a national healthcare system is considering which electronic health record (EHR) system to use and how to implement the EHR in all of its facilities. As a health care IT consultant, the student will work with various team members at the corporate level to gather information and analyze the efficacy, safety, security, and legal factors, as well as the cost effectiveness, cost-benefit factors of two possible new systems to help them decide whether or not to implement one of them. The student will also recommend a high level implementation plan that considers system cutover and change management.” It’s important that we, as administrators, get the most value out of their capital investments. To this end, students should understand the nature of IT –enabled value; steps to improve IT project value realization; and the inherent challenges to the realization of IT value.
