Unit 5: Discussion IT Support of Operations Introduction Serving as the director of a hospital’s health information department, the student guides a team that is struggling with a backlog of work and budgetary pressure. This scenario presents a number of realistic challenges that IT directors and other members of the management team routinely face; however, for this unit’s discussion, it is important that students not become overly fixated on the personnel issue between the director and the manager. It is something that cannot be ignored, but perhaps more important is meeting the deadlines associated with the department’s project. We, as operations professionals, have an obligation to meet project deadlines, since failure to do so can serious compromise the successful implementation of a necessary system intended to improve the quality of care and or operating efficiency of the organization. Directions Initial Posting Students are to complete the LearnScape for Health Care Human Resources: Episode 1: Overview: More Help Needed Now (Scenario).  Based on the information provided in the scenario and on an outside review of the relevant literature, the students will provide recommendations for a comprehensive tactical plan that will ensure the IT project is successfully completed on time and on budget. While some suggestions for keeping the project moving forward are explored in the scenario, they by no means represent an exhaustive examination of viable alternatives. When making your recommendations, it is important to take into consideration relevant personnel issues, internal resources constraints, and the fact that the hospital is considering a reduction in force (RIF).
