Introduction
Synopsis:Â Garrison Children's Hospital is part of Premier Health Care, an academic medical center. Premier has successfully implemented an electronic clinical documentation system in its adult hospital.
The adult hospital "drives the decisions" for the children's hospital. Consequently, the same documentation system was implemented at Garrison. The nurses at Garrison are actively resistant to adopting the new system, complaining that it is wholly inadequate for their needs.
As a result the nurses have created a system of workarounds leading to duplicate work. (Pages 615 through 617, Wager, Lee, and Glaser text)
This case study will illustrate just how important it is to fully understand the data needs and workflow patterns of an organization and its’ functional areas before rolling out new technologies or information systems. Based on the facts presented within the case and outside sources, the students will be expected to formulate and provide adequate support for a logically presented corrective action.Â
