Final Paper Spring 2019 Comm. 3088 Gender & Communications
In this 8-page paper full pages (minimum, and doesn’t include cover page, abstract page – if you include one – and Works Cited pages), with at least 5 cited academic articles (appearing in peer-reviewed journals) or books, let’s examine alternatives to media examples of what has been termed toxic masculinity. Julia Wood discusses this form of masculinity in Chapter 7 in our textbook, so you can find some scholarly references in the chapte
References. The American Psychological Association in August, 2019 issued guidelines for its members regarding traditional masculinity ideology. The association points to common themes like “anti-femininity, achievement, eschewal of the appearance of weakness, and adventure, risk, and violence.”
I have sent everyone in MESSAGES inside Blackboard a relevant and much-cited article on toxic masculinity (also called hegemonic masculinity).
Recently, toxic masculinity was the focus of much debate in the popular press after the airing of the Gillette video (see https:
www.nytimes.com/2019/01/15
usiness/gillette-ad-men.html?module=inline) Some critics blamed radical feminists for this attack on masculinity.
There is discussion of this subject of alternatives in the video inside Blackboard, “Tough Guise.” You might want to watch this and then note the examples of alternatives and develop arguments about the effectiveness of these examples.
Amanda Grombly, our li
arian, has this paper topic and is developing search strategies for you. I sent each of you her expanded hours for the end of the semester.
Due before midnight April 29. No late papers will be accepted.
