Relevance of the Disease to Public Health
LaTahysa Martin-Mckie’s report, “Public Health Organization & Management,” discuses the issue of epidemics in developed countries. Public health awareness has remained one of the major concerns in nearly all developed countries around the world. United States and Canada are examples of such countries. The countries have implemented strategies to prevent the spread of epidemics before any health problem arises. Epidemics include influenza, small pox, Anthrax, Swine flu, Influenza and HIV. With proper pandemic planning, the impact of such diseases on people’s health is lessened (“About Pandemics,” 2012).
The spread of epidemics results in poverty and increased mortality rates in any developed country. Epidemic attacks in most circumstances lead to death especially in circumstances where the socioeconomic, environmental and immunological factors are not provided efficiently to patients. Socioeconomic factors include both the social and financial support from immediate family members and friends of the patient. Environment refers to the physical conditions while the immunological factors are the necessary prescribed medication recommended for the sick person. Death cases are often seen in circumstances where the prevailing health conditions of patients are severe and the allocation of resources on the problem is minimal (Krumkamp, Stein & Chavez, 2011, p. 8).
Seasonal occurrences of disease outbreaks have increases the mortality rate in developed countries. In the United States, nearly 36,000 deaths a year are because of the spread of influenza.
