Mary Leakey’s Discovery of “Zinj” and Significance of Fossil
Mary Leakey and husband Louis Leakey together worked finding fossils of earlier humans. They were searching for the fossils of ancient human relatives called hominins under the layers of sediments located at Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania. The very painstaking and tedious task had a major relief when one day Mary noticed two protruding large teeth and ran back to inform her Louis who was down with fever the very day (YouTube).
The size of the large molars confused the couple into thinking it could not be of any fossil related to past humans but soon to realize that the fossil was of a hominin, which was a distant relative of today’s human species called as Homo sapiens. According to Dominguez-Rodrigo and Cobo-Sanchez, this was a valuable important discovery. They had found the remains of the earliest man that was ever found existed.
