1. Specialty area of Nursing Practice Highlighting Practice Changes Influencing Compassionate Nursing Care
My speciality area of nursing is clinical nursing practices. In my field, I have witnessed significant amount of change in nursing practices, which influenced the nursing care when looked under the lens of compassionate care perspective. As suggested by Papastavrou, Dimitriadou, Tsangari and Andreou (2016), clinical nurse has many important roles to conduct. The leading role, which is part of clinical nurse is clinical practices, training, research, teaching, consulting and management. Clinical nurse needs to manage care movement as they advocate the patient in getting cost-effective treatment and utilization of resources for optimal health outcomes.
As a clinical nurse, general as well as special duties are need to be conducted. Compassion is one of the important aspects in providing the quality care to the patients. Care settings are very depressing for patients to live in it. Getting admitted to the hospital or seeking treatment for chronic disease in hospital make patients vulnerable emotionally. Compassionate care not only include relieving suffering of patient but enable them to retain their independency and dignity (Sinclair et al., 2016).
Compassionate care in nursing improves the quality outcome of the patients. Nursing practices such as showing emotional support to the patient. This helps in reducing depression and strengthen patient’s will to handle its situation. Nursing practice normally includes administration of medicine to patient, monitoring their condition, and reporting to the doctor about patient situation. The compassionate nursing come in action when nurse started to do more than administering medicine, influence its nursing practice and leading to compassionate care.
For example, being empathetic towards the patient who are facing severe diseases. Listening to the patients to understand their needs. Talking to the alone patients and actively listen or discuss the health issues or complaint helps to identify the unspoken truth about the situation. Using positive body language and voice shows compassion towards the patients. Thus, just by forming bond with patient while taking care of patient change normal nursing care into compassionate care.
2. Stories about Care Environment gathering Evidence of Workplace Culture from a Compassionate Care Perspective
Hospital care settings, which provide the compassionate care for their patient have care work culture where people understand the need of patients as well as fellow colleague. I met this 50-year-old patient in a care setting. Her name was Mrs. Annie Wilmore. She told me that few years ago she got detected with
east cancer under the age of 35 years. She feels like her life was slipped from her hand within a span of few seconds. Then doctor came to her and told it is okay to be scared...
