Introduction
Dental caries or tooth decay, which is majorly reported to occur due to bacteria. It is a sugar driven, bio-film mediated, multifactorial and dynamic disease. Bacteria lead to tooth decay in mouth due to acids, which further leads to demineralization and remineralisation of enamel (hard dental issues). It would be essential to consider that dental caries are one of the most prevalent disease and can affect any individual at any age. Therefore, this paper would focus upon the major drivers of dental caries. Further, efforts would be made to present driving factors, which might lead to observed distribution of dental caries.
Common Drivers or Determinants of Dental Caries
As mentioned above also, dental caries is chemical dissolution of tooth mineral, which is resultant from metabolic events occu
ing in the dental biofilm. Therefore, it would be essential to understand that factors facilitating the development of dental bio-film will foster the growth of dental caries as well as its spread. Sugar facilitates the development of bacterial biofilm on the teeth; therefore, sugary foods and drinks can easily facilitate the development of dental caries. Likewise, poor oral hygiene fosters the growth of bacteria in mouth; thus, leading to increased risk of dental caries. Lack of fluoride, which is a naturally occu
ing mineral, helps in prevention of cavities by reversing the early stages of tooth damage. Eating disorders such as bulimia and anorexia can lead to tooth erosion; thus, facilitating the growth of bacterial bio-film. Therefore, these were some of the common drivers of dental caries.
Global Drivers of Dental Caries
According to the data presented by World Health Organisation (2020), dental caries is one of the most common health condition according to Global Burden of disease. Further, as evident from the report presented by FDI World Dental Federation (2020), sugar consumption has increased by up to three times over last 50 years and this rapid increase has been majorly reported from emerging economies. Free sugar intake of more than 60g per day increases the risk of dental caries among children as well as younger individuals. As supported by Welsh and Figueroa (2017), average sugar...
